Re: Do you try to finish every piece of fiction you write?
If at all humanly possibly, yes, I finish every piece of fiction that I write. I think that's how I'm going to get better. To take everything I write from beginning to end and sticking it out all the way. I always figure I'll improve with the next thing I write.

Re: Your Best Advice to a New Writer
I've been writing about 3 1/2 years, and definitely consider myself a newbie writer (and I'm pretty much brand new to this forum!), and I would say the advice below is something I've definitely tried to follow in the last few years. FINISH something. I used to have the chronic problem of never finis...

Re: Character Creation Process
I recently discovered the voice journal and love it. I'll get an idea of the character and start writing about them, from their point of view. (I do this with pen and paper, too - I agree with amandalinehan, some things just work better like that.) I also will work out my general plot arc with pen/...

Re: Character Creation Process
When I'm developing my characters, I basically just pull out a piece of paper (and for some reason I often like to do this with paper/pen rather than on the computer, I don't know why) and start writing down everything that I know about them, in a free-writing kind of fashion. This is fun and the ch...

Re: Periods of Feast or Famine
I had something of a famine day today. The last few days that I sat down and wrote, everything seemed to come quickly and flow really well. And then today, I got to a certain place in my current work and, I don't know, it just wouldn't come as quickly for me. And I didn't quite like what I had writt...

Re: YA vs. Adult
I read and write both YA and Adult, but there is one reason why I really like reading/writing YA. The teenage characters in YA books generally don't have to deal with the mundane details of life the way that adults do. ;) The don't have full time jobs where they are commuting and dealing with the bo...

Re: What is your writing weakness? (Let's call this therapy)
That's the kind of thing, if you force yourself to self-edit long enough, it should become less common among your writing habits. Good luck ;) Thanks. :) Yeah, since she told me that I'm already a little more aware of when it happens (and it's at least something to look for when I'm revising/editin...

Re: What is your writing weakness? (Let's call this therapy)
I had a beta reader say that I kept slipping into the past perfect tense ("they had entered the woods") when the present tense was perfectly suitable (they entered the woods). I thought it was interesting she picked that up because I don't know that I ever would have! I'm not sure why I wa...

Re: Writer's block
I find that I get blocked when something pops into my head to write, and, for some reason, I don't want to write it. I usually find that I resist the idea for a least a few minutes, but as soon as I begin writing what my original thought was, the block disappears and the words start coming again. Fo...

Cool! Yeah, I tend to write them as the mood strikes me, a lot of times if I'm taking a break from the novel I'm working on.CharleeVale wrote:

Re: The Introduction Thread
Hi there! My story is similar to many others in this thread - I lurked around here for a good while, and then decided it was time to actually participate! ;) I'm a novelist and flash fiction writer, and I also have a blog that is non-fiction (inspirational articles) that I've been writing for 3 1/2 ...
