Re: What's your editing style?

I'm a pen and paper kind of person. I prefer it because writing out the new stuff makes me slow down and actually focus on the words. When I'm reading it on screen I tend to go fast because the changes can be made quickly with the click of a button. On paper, I have to slow down because I write much...

Re: red-faced rookie

I can't say too much about your difficulty with smiling, sighing, shoulders slumping, because I have the same problem, and I have been working for years to try and control that. But as to the other thing, I find that the closer I get to the finish line, the harder it is to motivate myself. I think i...

Re: Writing From Loneliness

I think my main reason for writing is the need to be in complete control over something, and to be the one who builds the worlds and decides what people say, and put my characters through tough times where I know the exact outcome, even if it isn't a nice one. I think that's the reason that I write...

Re: The Coffee Shop - JULY

Hey, I know I haven't contributed to the coffee shop before, but I love reading all the conversations. I just wondered if any of you have ever just had a stroke of amazing luck with your writing and researching. In one of my stories, my characters have to repair a house, and I know nothing about con...

Re: Question on a travel niche?

This is not exactly in answer to your question, but I actually love to read travel guides. I love to get an idea of a place, but one of the things that I always look for is pictures. I want to have an idea of what I'm looking for and how to get there. My husband is Bolivian, and I have yet to find a...

Formatting the Manuscript

I just had a question that I'm sure someone out there can answer. When formatting a manuscript, I know there needs to be a page break between chapters, but my question is what do we do between scenes? Is a double return good enough or should I put some kind of symbol, like an asterisk to signify the...

Re: Funny Typos

I've had that happen. I'd written a story and had my sister read it, having thought that I had polished it. I had a woman open a door and find a bird and a door on her doorstep, when I really meant dog.

Novel Vs. Short Story

I have a question that might or night not have already been answered. I just found out about the writing contest in Writer's Digest, but their fiction areas have a word limit of up to 4000 words. I've really only written novels, but I would like to challenge myself further. I want to try, but I'm wo...

Re: Do love interest characters need to be sexy?

I would say definitely not. Just look at the story of Beauty and the Beast. It's a story that has been told for hundreds of years, through probably hundreds of versions and yet what they all have in common is that the beast is hideous and basically... beastly. And yet Beauty always finds him attract...

Re: What do you do well?

I think what I do best is that I can finish what I start. It took me many years to get to that point, but the first time I finished a WIP draft, I was hooked. It may take me months, but I always finish whatever draft I'm working on or whatever WIP I start.

Re: What pays your rent?

I think if I worked full time as a writer I'd still work at my hospital. It's very satisfying. I completely agree. And more than just being satisfied with my job (which I love) being around so many different people and in so many unique situations really fuels my creative juices. I can't count how ...

Re: Do you try to finish every piece of fiction you write?

Do you try to finish every piece of fiction you write? I don't know if it's a question of finishing or not finishing for me. To be honest, there are WIPs that I have that I have figuratively put on the back burner. It's not necessarily that I'm not going to finish it, but it's time to give the plot/...

What pays your rent?

Hi, I'm fairly new to the forum, and I've been reading a lot of your comments. I'm sure there are many of you who write enough that it can pay your rent, but I'm curious as to what the rest of you do for a day job. I'm a Registered Nurse and I work at a facility for Alzheimer's and Dementia. Basical...

Re: Your Best Advice to a New Writer

I'm fairly new to the forum as well, and I enjoy reading others' advice, though I still don't feel as though I have enough to contribute. I think the best advice I've heard is enjoy what you're doing. I know that if I'm bored with a scene that I'm writing, it's probably going to be even worse for th...
