That's a shame. Readings by who about what? Are the books dull? Authors dumpy and unable to articulate? I just went to a reading by a friend at the local college and people bought her book.
Edited to add my second thought. Or is this a sign of our TV culture?

Re: Slipping into your story during revisions
Wow, Holly - that's gotta be tedious and time-consuming, but I can totally see how that would work! Even for a fast typer. How many times do you retype the whole thing? Just once, I hope! Maybe I could try that for a single chapter and see whether I'm finding it effective or if I'm pulling my hair ...

Re: Slipping into your story during revisions
... I find my revisions start out well, and then after a little while I suddenly realize I haven't made a single mark on the paper for three or four pages. I got sucked into the story and forgot what I was supposed to be doing ... What tricks do you use to keep yourself from slipping into your stor...

Re: Our Friend the Ellipsis
Hi, michellelevy. I used to work for a newspaper, so I love stuff like this. Here are excerpts from a discussion on Grammar Girl (and I inserted some ellipses for the parts I omitted): Most style guides call for a space between the dots. Typesetters and page designers use something called a thin spa...

Re: Need a few good suggestions
Beethovenfan, are you telling the story in third person? In whose POV? I immediately thought about my youthful experience when I traveled to Cairo without knowing any Arabic. I got into real trouble. Most of the cab drivers knew English, but they tried to cheat me out of my money, so I bought a bike...

Re: Reading as writers
Rebecca, you asked, "Do you read as a writer? Or for pleasure?" That's an interesting question. I just donated seven boxes of paperback books to the library. They were stacked up two and three deep on my bookshelves. I figured I was supporting generations of dust mites, so they had to go (...

These links are great - thanks everyone! Just for clarification - are freely usable images different from Creative Commons ones (where the latter would need an attribution)? For example, pictures taken from Wikipedia Commons won't need an attribution, while pictures from Flickr Creative Commons req...

Re: Those ghastly -ly words
Good comments by polymath and GKJeyasingham. There's the "she said desperately" and then there's the current fashion to blast all LY adverbs. I throw in a few LY adverbs on purpose. I don't want to sterilize my writing. I want my writing to sound like a living, breathing, coffee-drinking h...

bcomet, great post. The Library of Congress http://www.loc.gov/index.html has free images, including maps and photos. NASA http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/index.html has beautiful free space images. NASA says you don't have to request permission to use their photos, which are all in the public domain...

Re: Seattle indie bookstore snubs Amazon-published author
I have a writer friend who feels like this bookstore does... but it's just plain goofy.
Sorry, little bookstore, but I'll bet Amazon carries every single book on your shelves. It's too late. Society has morphed out of your control.
I bought a Kindle today so I can proofread my ebook (evil laugh).
