bestsellers vs. classics

i liked your post about bestsellers vs. literary fiction: http://blog.nathanbransford.com/2013/09/bestselling-novels-by-year.html i was wondering if you've written or know of any similar studies/lists that examine how many bestsellers eventually become classics, esp. older works from the 18th-19th c...

book signings

I'm interested in hearing indie authors' experiences when it comes to book signings. I'm readying my novels for self-pubbing next year, and would definitely like some tips in this area. agent contracts

Hi Nathan,

I was wondering: if agents usually take 10-15% of clients' royalties, what happens if the client switches agents? Does the former agent still continue taking 10-15% for all deals s/he negotiated forever? Or does the new agent take over?

Thanks!

new frank herbert novel

i've posted this elsewhere on the interwebs, but nobody seems to know, so thought i'd bring it over here. =P i saw this on kevin j. anderson's blog and wasn't quite sure what to make of it: http://kjablog.com/?p=2698#respond apparently, one of frank herbert's bottom-drawer novels, "high-opp&quo...

Re: What is your writing weakness? (Let's call this therapy)

i have No Clue what it feels like to read one of my novels. i think if i could become a 100% objective reader of my own writing, it would make me a much better self-editor. unfortunately, it's impossible. =( Beta readers are your friends. Even after beta readers, a professional editor will (and age...

it's almost a week-old now, so not sure if that still counts as "new" in today's super-fast world!

Re: The end of the "celebrity author"?

"Ten years is an INCREDIBLY long time. I don't think I could stand 10 years of "practice" before "bursting out of the gate." In that case I'd be close to 30, and no offense, but man, seriously, by 21st-century standards, that is OOOOOLLLD. (The fact that I'm 19 and haven't d...
