Re: Nominate Your First Page for a Critique on the Blog

Chapter 0: I was born. I lived, and then died. Chapter 1: How elegantly simple if it were just that? But what about all that happens in between? The nuanced pain and suffering in birth, in living, and in dying. And what about what happens before and after? Where did I come from and where am I headed...

Re: Multiple POVs in first person. help please.

I'm reading Jodi Picoult's Handle with Care and it seems to be doing the Multiple first-person POV.
Each chapter gives a first-person POV from different characters and it seems to work (though i can't say it's my favorite style out there).

It might help to check it out :)

What is writing to you?

It takes courage to pick up the pen. So I've got a few tips. Write until you can't go any further without digging deep within yourself. Dig deep. Dig deeper, and dig until the mere thought of picking up the pen scares you. Now, take that leap of faith. Close you eyes and let the ink dance on the pag...

For anyone attempting the conjoined twin story, the real life case of Abby and Brittany is a great inspiration!

Re: (Revised) Beating the Heart- Query Critique :)

Attempt 3 Dear Agent, Michelle couldn’t believe it when her father was found dead—as far as she knew; he’d been dead her whole life. Now, she finds her mother might still be alive, and if she hopes to ever meet her again, Michelle must find her. Michelle moves into her old parent’s mansion to find ...

Re: Query Length

Thank you Kaitlyne and askmonkey for your suggestions! It definitely got me thinking in a new direction (hopefully, i'm thinking in the correct direction this time) I think i'll start over... again. But I'm hopeful I'll oneday get the query right. As for the first chapter, I did think about posting ...

Dear Agent, When Christie realizes that she has no date to her senior prom, she falls into a deep depression. In an attempt to cheer her up, her best friend takes her to a Voodoo master. At first, Christie is skeptical of the incense, and the chanting but, days later, every boy high schooler (since...

Re: All thoughts are welcome...Query**

Thanks so much Dakota and Esther. I really liked your suggestions. The reason Christies mom and friend are upset with her is because ever since all those guys started liking her Christie started being rude to her mom and ignoring her friend...The curse is more like a love hex on all the guys that s...

Re: following recipes loses the cake

Umm.... I see your point. I've heard agents automatically go for the delete button if the query is too "creative" but didn't Nathan say no agent will discard a query just because a few rules are broken? Be creative, but not to the breaking point, I'd say. But as for me, i think I'll stick to rules.....

Query Length

Nathan,

I know there seems to be a sweet spot for an ideal query, but do you see any trends based on genre?
It seems logical a Sci-Fi (or anything along this line) may require more space to explain.

I've looked through, and I don't think I've seen an answer to this one.
Thanks :)

Pure Pain or Pure Ecstasy??

Who said writing was fun? (If you’re out there, I’d love to meet you and snag a few tips!!) For me, it’s pretty much PURE PAIN. Not in the sense that I have a horrible plot and I hate having to replot every other day, or that I don’t enjoy stringing together words to create meaning. But the emotiona...

Re: Query Critique--Aurumenas

I don't know why, but this reminds me of Troy :)
But we all know the same stories are told over and over again and if the voice is unique, i think this could work

Mostly, though, I think agents will be piqued the most with your background!
Good Luck and Merry Christmas!
