Re: "Don't be a draught horse..."

They depicts the draft horses as a "draught horse"..As it's only a personal opinion of the writer..His counter views may vary meanwhile. Care to expand on that observation, as it makes no sense to me whatsoever in the present context? Draught, in my world, is merely a variant (albeit arch...

Re: Why you'll never be any good....

Ah! SquarePen, how funny! You have quite nicely delineated the basic fears and insecurities of the majority of writers. And you are quite correct in saying, "It's the ones who think they are so good they couldn't possibly get any better that... well, usually could, not to put too fine a point o...

Re: Taxes and Filing at a Loss

So...I've always heard that you can file as a self-employed writer and operate at a loss for 2 years in a row. Does anyone know if Turbo Tax has an easy way to file this way, or would you recommend an accountant? Any advice is appreciated; you don't need to be a tax lawyer. Links to relevant resour...

Re: Best Medicine For Knowing You Can Write

See? For me it's just frustrating. When I see that crap on tv and compare it to my own work and that of struggling writers of my acquaintance - published and unpublished, I can only shake my head and wonder who the author of this or that POS is sleeping with! I know people who have written exception...

Re: Why you'll never be any good....

The complication is I write assuming my audience is equally able and consequently readers miss the mark, which is my failing as a writer. The fourth law of writing: do not write smarter than your audience. If I can find the happy medium, look out. I just might manage to write the narratives I have ...

Re: Sports Fiction: Is there any point?

Well, I wrote a semi-lengthy response to your question and then promptly lost it in the nether world as I hit the wrong key! So, here, in abbreviated form, is my reply. Rugby is not just for Brits anymore. Although Americans have known about rugby for some time, the game saw a resurgence in the 1950...

Re: Bad writing is an oxymoron...

Hillsy: "So a bad writer doesn't write anything down...therefore, nothing's written." Uhhh. Don't think that I can agree with your argument. There is a LOT of really, truly crappy writing out there - even more that you and I will, thankfully, never see. And, no matter how you want to twist...

Re: Separate email accounts for personal and writing ? names?

I like to keep my personal life and my business life apart. So, too, I like to keep my writing business life apart. I do not keep my personal correspondence seperated, whether family, friends, or other writers. I have a separate e-mail for my business mail and do not cross over my personal emails an...

Re: Email subject line for requested materials

A good idea, while not deleting the original subject line, add "Per Your Request" or "Per Your Request of [date]". This immediately lets the agent know this is something more than a slushpile query submission and helps to separate it from the rest of the inbox.

Re: What T.V. shows are you watching?

While I used to be a never-miss devotee of Leverage and mourned its "passing" I don't generally watch a lot of television. Person of Interest is interesting but not something I watch on a regular basis. Maybe once or twice a month. I never ... repeat ... NEVER watch pseudo reality shows. I...

¿Tu decidido aprender español? Bueno para usted. Ahora necesitas practicar.

Re: How many Characters do you have?

Hmm. Let's see. Just to give you a few … Book 1: Fantasy - ONE, count'em, one Main Character(s). Then there are perhaps eight or nine secondary, critically important and named characters. All of these characters are named and have surnames as well because lineage is of great importance in this story...

Re: A full MS request from agent and publisher at same time...

Well, since you've already sent this one off, and please let us know how it turned out, for future reference, there is an issue of integrity involved here. While being fully aware of Writers House's policy/preference you chose to ignore that and send to the ebook publisher. The proper path to follow...
