Re: The guilt of being a non-published fiction writer

I think we're all just worried about being taken as pretentious posers. There are plenty of people who say they're writers who aren't actually writing anything, and they give all the rest of us a bad name. But I hate to break it to you - it never ends, even if you are published. Here's how it goes w...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

I've been asked to write a blog by my publisher. Here's an entry on my ten-year journey to get a play produced.

Re: Game of Thrones

I think they're outstanding. Truly worth it. There are, of course, jaw-dropping moments, but when was the last time you read a book when you were legitimately scared for the main characters? You know they might perish at any point, no one is safe, and that anything can happen. I love his willingness...

Re: Can I share some good news with you?

Congratulations! How wonderful! Keep us informed!

(Still on submission with mine - looks like it will be an R&R for me, but I still have my fingers crossed.)

Re: Strategic title

Curriculum Vitae. Essentially a resume, with emphasis on anything that might inform you as a writer.

Re: Screenplay craft book for Novelists?

I'm a screenwriter/novelist/playwright, (well, mostly playwright) but the single most useful book I've ever found for screenwriting is Save the Cat, by Blake Snyder. Snyder might not be your cup of tea, but he's brilliant at structure. And character development and structure should go hand-in-hand. ...

Re: Four Ways NOT to Get an Agent

Although I agree with the vast majority of this, I think that if you have specific and impressive credentials that will force someone to take you more seriously, you put them up front. Let's say you were a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in another field, or had some other singular, major award that...

Re: Concerns about the darkness in recent YA

I don't write YA, I don't read YA, but I do teach writing, and I've taught it to kids ranging from 12-22 or so. I'm also not so old that I don't look back at what I wrote when I was 17-21 or so (or more fairly 17-25) and shudder. I'll agree that 90% of all teenage writers and even college-age writer...

Re: Rejection Stats

Here's how it worked: In January, a colleague of mine, who's a mid-list (on occasion best-selling) author, put me in touch with an agent friend of hers. Agent #1 was excited and said she'd get back to me in two weeks... Two months later - I had nudged her twice, but nothing, so I figured she wasn't ...

Re: Super Sad True Agent Story

I agree. Agents get a hundred or more queries a day. They can only represent a few clients well. It's all very well and good for us to say that they should be faster, or they should be more respectful, but their job isn't responding to queries. Their job is representing their clients. If an agent sp...

Re: Super Sad True Agent Story

I wouldn't give up on the other agent just yet. Who knows what's going on over there. It sounds like you're really, really close. Try sending another round of queries (terrible, I know, but some on querytracker report sending as many as 175 queries before finding an agent) and then get started on bo...
