Re: First 500 Words - MG Fantasy

Hi Shipple. Haven't come by here in a while but here are my two cents. 1) The MC waking up is really cliche. It's certainly an easy way to introduce a character without rambling on about what the events that happened prior to the inciting incident, but it's quite overdone. I'm sure there's another w...

Re: Chapter 2 is now complete!

Wow. 16k in and only 2 chapters? I'm 42k in and I haven't even divided it into chapters yet. Writer circles, publishers, agents, etc., don't go by chapters. They go by word count. Although its all subjective, word count lengths vary by genre. There are some guidelines over ar the Absolute Write foru...

Re: Chapter 2 is now complete!

Umm... Congrats?

No really, congratulations. Every completed chapter is one chapter closer to finishing! I myself am savoring the 20K or so words I have left to finished. But it's the first draft so I still have much to go, as do you.

Re: In the Shadow of the Dragon King - 2 page synopsis

I'm not quite at the stage of creating my own synopsis, therefore it's still a bit foreign to me. However, there was one thing that caught my eye: MARTIN SANDERMAN - you refer to him as the neighborhood bully, yet he's running around stabbing and shooting people? That sounds more like a dangerous fe...

Re: When is fiction YA?

The basics of my WIP are a Tom Sawyer-type runs away from an abusive home-life to join a group of hobo knights-errant adventuring around a steampunk/clockpunk fantasy version of the American South during the economic and cultural fallout of a big war that ended while the MP was a baby; there's a De...

Re: Exerpt scene from IRREFUTABLE.

Sample scene from new WIP. I'm going for just a touch of suspense. I want to know if you, as a reader would be interested enough to read on. It appeared on the right. High up on the wall near the ceiling and moved slowly to the left, toward the corner, then across the wall in front of her. It was s...

Re: Pronunciation Guides in Novels

I was reading in the ALL THINGS BOOKS part of the forums under character names we don't like. Someone mentioned that if you have to have a pronunciation guide in order to get through the names that perhaps the names should be changed. I am in the middle of a historical fiction that uses a LOT of Na...

Re: OK, how about least favourite characters' names?

All Slavic or Germanic-based names in essentially every epic fantasy book written in the past 20 years. For instance, the Eragon books. I don't want to feel like I'm coughing up a hairball every time I try to pronounce something like Blarfengar or Juttonyyrdsil, nor do I want to have to stop mid-rea...

Re: The Harry Potter effect in my MG/YA writing

To be fair, there is another popular MG series called The Children of The Red King . The first book is Midnight for Charlie Bones written by Jenny Nimmo, also a British author. The books are quite popular. The story is essentially about an unlucky boy who is shipped off to a boarding school for &quo...

Submissions to Generic Agency emails

Hi Nathan - fellow lurkers, This may be a common/stupid question: When submitting a query to a generic email, i.e. submissions@fakeagency.com, what is the proper way to address the person who is reading your email? Obviously there is no specific agent you're emailing, just a submissions pool. I've r...
