Re: (This thread is not yet titled)

I was talking to a friend that is writing a book and he said he didn't have a title yet. I couldn't understand that! I LOVE thinking of titles for my books. I have titles for books I haven't even started writing yet. So... am I odd? Do you like thinking of titles or is it something you do not conce...

Re: 10 reasons e-books might not eat the world

An interesting proposition, but one I do not agree with. Here is why ebooks WILL eat the world. 10. I disagree. The book is text on a page, but reading is a much larger experience driven by numerous factors. Improving the experience improves the story. Imagine a book that comes with its own soundtra...

Re: How do you celebrate finishing a book?

I'm like Heather B. I finish one, I try to decide which one I want to work on next. I'll usually have two or three false starts before I find an ms that catches and I start working on it full-time.

Re: Best Fantasy Books

I have to agree with Ink, Tad Williams is one of my favorite fantasy authors. While the epic trilogy Memory, Sorry, and Thorn made him a best seller, I usually introduce people to him with the stand-alone novel THE WAR OF THE FLOWERS. Urban Fantasy enthusiasts will enjoy that one as well, I think. I...

[Swapping out the below with a more recent story] Title: JEHOVAH'S HITLIST (or DOWN BELOW THE UP ABOVE) Genre: Alternate-History Science Fiction Chapter 1 All but for the want of shoes. Jehovah looked at the street ahead of him, trash strewn from either gutter and up the walls to his knees. One brok...

Re: Query - Wanted: Chosen One, Now Hiring (Fantasy)

I shortened the query considerably and it's better for it. The names will remain as a matter of context. Any agent I send this to will rep fantasy and won't be turned off by the names. As the genre goes, those names are incredibly simple. Plumb the depths is an idiom, but I've scratched it. I took t...

Re: The Process

If you have a good idea, write it down. :) The thing is, if I have a good idea and don't write it down, I will forget. If I then try to reconstruct that idea from the tidbits that are left, it will suck. So I either have to write it down or go a different direction. I don't actually forget the big s...

Re: Query - Wanted: Chosen One, Now Hiring (Fantasy)

What exactly is bbasbabsbaASSDS?

The query for my current solicitation is much shorter. On Kristen Nelson's blog, she posted a query that caught her attention and I was surprised at the length. So for my WIP, I wrote the above to see how it compares.

Thank you for your comments.

Re: Computer, thy name is Satan

When I'm writing, I turn off the computer's wireless modem. As soon as that thing comes on, I'm done for a couple hours at least. So it stays off until I'm done writing.

Re: Recommended Fantasy Under 150K

Lois McMaster Bujold's Challion books (CURSE OF CHALLION, PALADIN OF SOULS, and THE HALLOWED HUNT) are all 150k I believe. Certainly not as long as her Sharing Knife books.

While most of the fantasy books I read are 250k, the one I'm writing right now will finish around 150k.

Re: Recommended Fantasy Under 150K

A number of years ago I did the whole word count research and got one number. And I did it again recently, out of necessity, and got another. Times have changed, and changed decidedly in favour of the shorter novel. The economic and publishing situation has imprints looking to push down cost and ri...

Re: Share your opening sentence!

From the manuscript I'm currently soliciting:

William Henderson wears pants and a suit coat.

From the manuscript I'm currently writing:

Nashau had never been in a city as large as Tinadian.
