Re: Ask Nathan

Hi Nathan =) I'm a bit confused in regards to responding to material requests. I remember you mentioned earlier that keeping agents waiting for more than a week or two after their request is impolite. But would agents also consider it to be impolite if they are one out of a dozen who currently have ...

Re: Rejection Stats

Good lesson for all: Had a list of 40 agents to query, arranged from most desirable to least. I began by querying the first and the last. The next day, got a request for a partial from the first! So what do I do? I send the partial and then proceed to bomb every other agency on the list. After all,...

Re: Personal Rejections

well, this is interesting. Two more rejects, both personal. One of the agents told me that she'd moved my story to the top of her pile after her confirmation, and after some thought, she said it was engaging, and it had a well constructed plot, but she couldn't connect with the ending... I wonder if...

Stray Rejection?

So two weeks ago, an agent asked to see my manuscript and I sent it. Today, oddly, I got a rejection, not for my manuscript, but for my original query. When I mailed her back saying that she already requested my manuscript and asked if she meant she was rejecting my manuscript with the new email, sh...

Re: Something's wrong... I can't find it. Help please.

@ transitoria: thank you for pointing out the first one. it was already mentioned earlier by someone else, so i changed that one already. also thank you for the "was standing" catch. the rest of the "was"/ "were" you mentioned were intentional, sort of as a pace referen...

Re: Something's wrong... I can't find it. Help please.

Thank you all so much for your comments. they really helped me edit. So far I've gotten: @ Matt X: I took your advice in making the protagonist think more about the event by changing the part from going back to browsing books to thinking about the problem while attempting to hoist herself up by the ...

Something's wrong... Help please. [new version]

Edit: Thank you guys so much. I made a lot of changes from your advice. The updated version is on the next page. ... Waiting's driving me mad... So I finally got one of my full's back today. Rejection, but it was a long shot anyways. But the problem is that I get more than my share of requests... it...

Re: How old are you?

I agree with Heather... Hell, I'm 20 and I don't want to be picking up 20 year olds. An entire college campus, and the only decent guys I've met are a pre-med hermit (taken) and a guy who goes with class with a briefcase (doesn't stop walking long enough to chat). Meanwhile, a block down the street,...

Re: Rejection Stats

Best of luck, CafeCliche. And I agree: this waiting game's not fun anymore. I found myself sending a query yesterday just so I would have something to read this morning.

maybe it's time to take up underwater basket weaving....

Well I totally disagree with you totally disagreeing - so there. Suh, you have offended my honor. I challenge you to a duel by dodgeball. I draft Mira, polymath, J.T. Shea, and hereby offer an exclusive contract to Quill. You may have George Clooney and all the goats you can find. At dawn! Ah, I lo...

Re: Ask Nathan

Hi Nathan,

I was just wondering: how many partial/full rejections is too many for a publishable book? Is there a rough number of request rejections that, once hit, gives a signal to quit?

Thank you again.

Re: How old are you?

Margo - as someone approaching mid-life, let me tell you, getting older is under-rated. There is a definite trade-off. You lose alot of the phyical attributes of youth, but what you gain is - I believe - worth it, and ultimately more valuable. Which is a very good thing. I know the young can get de...

I'm with you dude... I use to day-dream about meeting the material request agent. Now it's just "+1" to the "sent reply" stack.

Re: Personal Rejections

You're right, it could be difficult to determine exactly what is missing or not as strong as it could be! Myself, I plan to hire a freelance editor when I'm ready, to try to avoid such a quandary. Short of that, I would think a really trusted, talented beta reader might provide the same sort of dia...
