Re: Should wealthy writers win literary awards?

Ignoring four pages of discussion to answer the title:

Yes.

Provided their book actually merits said award.

Re: What are you reading now?

Recently read Marketable Depression, currently leisurely working through My Liverpool Home (Kenny Dalglish's memoir/auto) and planning to power through Resolution, by Richard B. Parker, at some point over this Thanksgiving break.

Re: Teenage Writers?

Eighteen, clock started on the closing legs to nineteen. Not horrendously active, but I'm here. And once again I do my "ignore every other post just to respond to the first or a piece of the first that makes me feel like responding" thing.

Re: How much detail for readers outside the USA

Frankly, I'm not sure how much I would trust this reader. I know politically apathetic British teens who have a basic understanding of what a senator is, and the term bill is used to refer to a proposed law in the United Kingdom as well as the United States. Equally, I wouldn't worry too much about ...

Re: Writing Soundtracks

Music interferes with the creative process. If I even have one line of a song stuck in my head, I can't write until it's gone. 90% of the time if there's music, it's what my mind locks on to. The remaining 10% of the time it shifts a significant portion of its focus. I would stop writing to listen t...

Re: Wackiest "advice"/comments you've gotten from non-writers

You should know Latin if you're to have any command of the English language. Frighteningly enough, I actually agree with this one. Classical only, of course, not that medieval crap. I don't agree on the "any command" but oh yes it does help. And yes, yes classical Latin. Dear god medieval...

Re: Do you keep your WIP to yourself?

I might share bits and bobs of ideas with certain friends, but for the most part I keep things under wraps until I have at least a second draft.

Re: Are you a Crafter or an Artist?

Both. Solid mix. I mean I don't use it for self-expression per se, but I do it because it's fun and I enjoy it, but at the same time I would like it to become my sole income source because I enjoy it and it leaves a lot more free time than a 9-5 job. So at this particular juncture in time, I'd be an...

Re: Novel vs Story

I'd agree. A novel is a sort of story. Story is a rather broad term. Novel, not so much. Now if she'd said "A story is not necessarily a novel" we could be in business here, but otherwise, I disagree.

Re: Justin Beiber Writing a Memoir... oh, he's 16 yrs old

Age doesn't quite matter so much. There are probably sixteen year olds out there who could write an infinitely more interesting memoir than any eighty year old. Him, specifically, is clearly just to milk his present popularity. But hey, whatever floats their boat. It'll sell like hot cakes and in fo...

Re: Love Scenes: Straight and Gay

It's possible, but it's equal possible they'll ask you tone down the straight scene. I mean I could be wrong, but I don't imagine an agent/editor would ask you to edit down a scene just because it involves homosexual as opposed to heterosexual relations. Regarding your questions above, well, I basic...

Well, sometimes things are very obviously form. Like this old thing: Thank you for querying Browne & Miller Literary Associates about your book project. We have carefully evaluated your materials and regrettably, your project is not a right fit for our agency. We currently have a very full clien...

Re: How do you celebrate finishing a book?

I sit down the next morning/later that day/whatever the appropriate time difference is and say it's time to start the next one. If a man up and celebrated every time he did something, he'd never get anything done, and I've already got enough problems keeping myself on track with writing. Take the ti...
