Re: Let's Discuss Edward...
Okay, I'm probably going to say something shocking here: I don't see how Bella's and Edward's relationship was as terrible as some people are saying. I have read SO many YA books lately that have portrayed female MCs who treat their male counterparts like crap while the guy essentially worships at h...

Re: The Introduction Thread
Hello, everyone! I'm actually not a new member, but it's been such a long time since I've visited that I might as well be. :) My name is Emily White, I live close to Niagara Falls, NY, I primarily write YA sci-fi and fantasy, and I'm very excited about my debut novel, ELEMENTAL! And yes, I am...

Re: Orignality in Fantasy (specifiaclly re: Creatures and Races)
That's just it -- YOU want new and different things. You shouldn't dismiss the quite large group of people out here who don't want new things when it comes to this sort of fantasy. I don't want to read about an elf with a twist. I want to read about elves who are elves. People always go on about th...

Why Aren't Publishing Companies Doing This?? http://steppingintofantasy.blogspot.com ... doing.html
I'd like to get all your thoughts on why publishing companies haven't started using commercials to advertise new books.

Re: Any book collectors here?
Oh yes! I collect school books from the 19th century and earlier. I specifically like the science textbooks (of course the English school readers are fascinating, too). I have one collection that talks about life on Mars and how our telescopes have caught even the day to day doings of the Martians. ...

Re: East Coast Heatwave
That's hotter than the highest ever officially recorded! The hottest I can remember with humidity was 105 degrees at the Great Lakes Naval Academy, north of Chicago. We were there for a nephew's graduation, and the poor guys had to stand at attention for some time in the sweltering hanger. Towards ...

Re: East Coast Heatwave
I've lived through 130-145 degree weather wearing layers of clothing and body armor, so this is actually pretty bearable. Yowza! Where does it get that hot? Even Phoenix, Arizona doesn't get over 120. I think she's talking Iraq. Even the metaphors there are hot. Indeed. :D Iraq and Kuwait, actually...

Re: East Coast Heatwave
I'm surrounded by Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, so the New York temperature is slightly cooler here. To tell you the truth, I wouldn't even run the A/C if it weren't for the kids. I've lived through 130-145 degree weather wearing layers of clothing and body armor, so this is actually pretty bearable.

Re: The Absentee Parent Conundrum in Children's Lit
i don't think anyone is saying that ALL stories should or should not have absentee parents. each story and character should be considered individually. i think that some of us are saying that having absentee parents can come in handy, while others are saying that we shouldn't kill off parents (or m...

Re: The Absentee Parent Conundrum in Children's Lit
Though I do see (and understand) the trend in YA to use absentee or bad parents as a source of tension or a way to force the MC to learn to stand on his/her own two feet, I must say I prefer writing the opposite. In the WIP I'm currently editing, the MC was ripped from her parents and forced to spen...

Re: Forum game: Random facts about you
This may sound a bit morbid, but I enjoy walking through old cemeteries, mostly the ones that are alone in some abandoned farm field, or just a random plot in the middle of suburbia where the old stones are surrounded by new houses and stores. Maybe it's my writer's mind, but so much is revealed ju...

Re: Forum game: Random facts about you
Random facts about me: My husband and I got engaged three weeks after we met. On Jaws: I LOVE JAWS! But surfing at Dillon Beach is still out of the question. My husband and I did, too! :D This is a fun game! Let's see...well, I once sang the national anthem at a Minor League baseball game, I can sa...

Re: So who's entering Nathan's first page contest?
I wouldn't worry about it. Nathan started the contest for people who follow the blog, not us forumites. I'm more of a reader myself. I come often, but comment rarely. :D Edit: I should clarify because it looks like I'm telling you to be inactive. What I meant to say was that you shouldn't feel guil...
