Re: Ask Nathan

Also, now is a good time for me to advise everyone to hurry hurry hurry and buy the domain for your name or pen name if at all possible. Then you can set up a very professional e-mail address along the lines of yourfirstname@yourfirstandlastname.com My name is fairly common, and the domain name is ...

Re: Censorship on the iPad and iPhone

I'm just wondering what there is to protest here. Doesn't Apple have the right to decide what they do and do not want to sell? Maybe I am missing something altogether here. The articles pointed out in this thread say that Apple doesn't use words it feels is offensive in the description of their prod...

Re: Book Reviews a Bad Idea?

Oh, Jen, I'm not saying you should say negative things about people lower on the scale. Goodness, no. I'm glad you said that, so I'm not misunderstood. What I meant is that you can do so without censure. That's why you see industry professionals critiquing, and even mocking, writers without it affe...

Re: Book Reviews a Bad Idea?

I would definitely be careful. You never know who you are going to need to work with in the future. I'm not suggesting anyone lie...but I would think twice before giving a negative public review of a published book. I think setting out to review books is different than giving your opinion about a bo...

Re: Word Counts

I have read on various agent blogs that it doesn't matter that much which formula you go with...however, most say to just use the count from your word processing program. Either way, since both methods are regularly used, I don't think an agent would think you're dishonest because you chose one over...

Re: So do you have any foes on this site?

I don't think that Nathan put the friend/foe lists on the forum. I think they just come as part of the forum automatically. :) Kind of silly. Under FAQ, it says posts made by your foes will be automatically hidden from you. I guess that way you don't have to see anything from people you find objecti...

Re: Contest ideas?

Another thread, about the importance and difficulty of gestures, in All Things Writing, got me thinking about gestures. I began examining the way I use gestures in my own writing, which made me think about better ways to use them. Do they always have to be little crutches, used when we don't know ho...

Re: Do you like Hardcovers?

I used to like hardcover books better than paperback because they looked nicer. They were pretty on the bookshelf or lying on the table. Now, I much prefer paperback. I don't have room in the bookcases to keep books simply because they look pretty. Practically all of the shelves are taken up with ki...

Re: Pure Pain or Pure Ecstasy??

I often get emotional when I am writing, but then again I have been known to cry when I read something sad. I think it is necessary--for me, anyway--to feel those emotions when I am writing in order to hopefully evoke them in a reader. If I wasn't upset when something horrible happened to a characte...

Re: What's your preference re: internal monologue in 3rd ppov?

A. Italicized thoughts in first person present tense: "Yes, sir." God, you're such a jerk. B. Third person: "Yes, sir." God, he was such a jerk. I misread choice B and thought it was the same as choice A, just not italicized. Oops. So, I would have to change my opinion. I like both methods. Rather ...

Re: Book trailers: who makes them, $$$, and are they worth it

I have mixed feelings about book trailers. I've seen some nice ones, but I don't really like what are essentially movie-like commercials for books. It's almost like saying that reading alone is not tantalizing enough, you have to make it look like t.v. or the movies. I'm sure that it works for some ...

Re: What's your preference re: internal monologue in 3rd ppov?

Internal monologue in 3rd person POV needs to be italicized or in quotations marks. Either are correct, so you can mix and match between those all you want. My personal preference is italicized.

Re: Sam said vs. said Sam

I believe I see 'Sam said' far more than the other, but I can't be positive because good dialogue tags go unnoticed by the reader. For some reason, I don't really care for 'said Sam.'

There isn't really a rule for this. Both are grammatically correct. It is just author preference.
