Re: The Thorn Tree - YA Paranormal
Hi all, Came up with a structure that I think is more compelling. Haven't fine-tuned the second paragraph yet, but would love some feedback. Thanks! Carolyn Lepworth suspects her mom had a lot of secrets. The longer they stay hidden, the more people die. And she thought living in New Hampshire would...

The Thorn Tree - YA Paranormal
Hi everyone. Here's the query for THE THORN TREE, a 60,000 word YA Supernatural. I haven't bothered with the basic intro/closing parts. Please have at it! I have a thick skin. When Carolyn Lepworth’s parents die in a subway accident she moves in with her estranged grandmother in Rathcrannog, New Ham...

Re: Fantasy Novel Query-- "2nd" draft
Thsi is much better than the first draft! Kellek belongs to a sect of mystics that can see into the future, but he couldn’t foresee his closest friend, a legendary knight, having his heart stolen by a love-struck witch, reducing him to a mindless zombie. I think there's one caluse too many in this s...

Re: Do any of you other unpublished authors have websites?
I'm considering buying a second domain. (Then I'd have to pay for hosting packages for both. Sigh.) Actually, you shouldn't! Most web hosts these days, even on budget packages, allow you to host multiple websites within one hosting package. Once you register the domain name and point the nameserver...

Revising with an e-reader
This weekend I discovered that e-readers have an unexpected benefit. I think mine just became a centerpiece of my revision process. Years ago I went to school for stage acting and one of the things we had to get a handle on was keeping our delivery "fresh", even though we were speaking the...

Re: Questions about editing, pre and post agent.
I don't think it matters what you address first as you start to edit and revise, as long as it all gets covered. I focus on the story first, because I find it harder to be objective about plot, character etc. than with grammar and word choice. I'm planning to do the serious copy editing last, becaus...

YA Crit Partner?
Hi! I'm looking for a critique partner who writes YA (of any genre). My MS is YA supernatural, 60,000 words and set in rural New England, where a newly orphaned 13yr old New Yorker must fight off the vengeful spirit of a 19th century priest while trying to fit in with the popular girls at school. Th...

Re: Have you ever been inspired by a song?
Not exactly, but: As part of a web design project i did a sample promotional site for my WIP. In it I included a "soundtrack" page with a Flash music player. I assembled a playlist of royalty-free music that fit the theme and story arc of the book. I kept the "soundtrack" around ...

Re: Attachment to your first draft?
Having someone else critique your work really helps put things in perspective. I had a handful of strangers pick apart three chapters of my manuscript in a workshop and it was really enlightening. In addition to them all agreeing on certain parts that didn't work, they identified broader problems th...

Re: When Google steals your word...
I don't think you need to worry. Questions of copyright infringement vs. fair use generally hinge on whether the use of the name can be confused with the existing brand, or construed as an endorsement. But that's why publishers have legal departments--you can let them worry about it.
