Seeking objectivity

For me, the hardest part of writing is stepping back and seeing my own work with fresh eyes. By way of background, I have a lot of experience critiquing writing samples. When I was in college back in the stone ages of the mid 1980s, I worked as a reader for a publishing house. They'd send me the fir...

Re: Do you have a writing routine?

An excellent article on the subject in the Washington Post: Resolved: Writing is a job By Ann Patchett Sunday, December 13, 2009 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/10/AR2009121003658.html Excerpt: My New Year's resolution for 2010 has its origins in a couple of conversation...

Re: Do you have a writing routine?

I don't believe in waiting for inspiration. I've found that writing has to become a ritualized habit for me (kind of like brushing my teeth or drinking my morning coffee) or I'll simply never get around to it. I figure it's like exercising. Re: Ask Nathan

A follow-up to the above, if it's not too nosy. If it is, please feel free to ignore it. If you were to take on five new clients in a year, roughly how many more do you think you might offer to represent that, for whatever reason, would chose not to become clients of yours? I'm tempting the gods by...

Re: Ask Nathan

Nathan, if I recall correctly, I saw that you read something like 7,000 - 10,000 queries a year and take on 2-3 new clients a year. That may be completely wrong, or those may be old figures, so I'm curious if I have the numbers right? I find infinitesimal odds strangely thrilling! Thanks. This year...

Re: Monkeys vs. Bears

December 8, 2009 Mr. Nathan Bransford San Francisco, CA Dear Mr. Bransford, I was given your name by Clyde the Gentle Giant at the San Diego Zoo, and he suggested that I contact you regarding my latest novel. Bears are grumpy and simple creatures. Monkeys are cheeky little bastards. They share few t...
