Re: Timing in Publishing

Heh heh. It's a good thing that doesn't sound too bad now, because come publication I might realize it's worse than I thought. Still, no sense cowing now. Thanks for the info and tips, Polymath--I'm glad the guru's still around to impart wisdom now and then.

Re: Timing in Publishing

Thanks, Quill! And yes, they are fiction--fantasy, in fact. Staggered releases sounds like a good compromise now that you mention it. I think the most frightening aspect to a newbie like me is how much I have to learn if I expect to keep my feet in e-publishing, but I'll just have to buckle down and...

Timing in Publishing

Hi all, it's me again. Sorry for yet another long absence--school plus work plus writing plus editing equals a rather tired Fenris, but I've come back at long last because you've always been a merry (and helpful) bunch, and I found I rather missed you. Also, I had a question. I've been working on an...

Re: Formal Training

Teaching can only go so far. We actually have to do something ourselves--in this case, write--to make it matter. Classes give us a bit of practice, but it's not the experience we gain there that necessarily defines us. Writing is a very intimate task: we take an idea that grew in our heads or our he...

Re: Of the characters you've written, who is your favorite?

My favorite would have to be a young woman named Ren. She's a member of an "accidental" race (I write fantasy) created by another one of my protagonists, a race that's been persecuted by the humans since their creation. Having plenty of reasons to hate the humans, she obscures the features...

Oh! I thought I'd caught all the threads on the workshop, but I guess not. Thanks, Margo.

Re: The Bransforumsfest Writing Workshop Brainstorm

I realize I'm both reviving a seemingly dead thread and posting after a long silence, so you'll have to forgive me for breaching general forum etiquette...but I have a question. It may be far too late to bring this up, but I've just thought of it: would it be possible to broaden the theme of the myt...

Re: Publishers Weekly on the future of YA

But keep in mind that war is conflict, and conflict is interesting. Also, when given the chance, modern audiences tend to prefer action over discussion (as evidenced by the success of the Transformers movies), so naturally there would be more successful books about war than about rational discussio...

Re: Article: Blogging bad idea for writers

Don't sweat it about the age, Rachel, I've been here since I was 16 (17 now). Best to get an early start, right? I'm afraid I'm not really the expert on general blogging pros and cons, but I can say that I'm getting rather fed up with it personally. Do I like it? Yes. Occasionally. But more often th...

Re: Publishers Weekly on the future of YA

[*] Suzanne Collins, author: "This is a population of young people who don’t remember a time when the country was not at war." That makes my stomach hurt to read. Young people read books that both reflect and distort their own realities, and it's sad to think that wars in novels are the f...

Re: Oct 5 2011: Steve Jobs is dead :(

I found out about this late last night and couldn't sleep. Normally I only get that when a close friend or relative dies, but I guess it applied here simply because of how incredibly big this guy was. He affected everyone (for example, I'm typing this on a Macbook now). I can't help but wonder what ...

Re: Idealism vs. Conspiracy

Um, wouldn't be easier to just use utter disaster when you need it, rather than limit yourself to the die roll? In some cases, yes. But keep in mind that the setting might not be appropriate for, say, a full-scale tidal wave to come out of nowhere, plus it would get a bit repetitive after a while. ...

I think it's time to dust off my Unfortunate Disaster dice... ...Are those real? If so, I WANT SOME!!! :D Haha they don't sell them (I think), I just made them because I thought they'd be fun. They work best when you keep the fates general, since it can get repetitive if they're too specific and yo...
