Re: How do terrible books get published?

Hah! this has turned into an amusing thread, thanks for everyone's comments. I think the book I originally posted about was published because the author has a long track record and is very famous, and people just pick up her books like they watch episodes of their favorite sitcom or whatever. A bran...

How do terrible books get published?

Over last summer I picked up an airport paperback for reading on a long vacation trip. I won't name the author, but the genre was female-oriented thriller, and the name was famous. I have to say that this book was not redeemable in any way. I mean, I do not expect F. Scott Fitzgerald-quality writing...

Where do you find lists of agents?

I hate to sound naive, but I'm new here, and I am wondering, but where do you find lists of agents to contact? The ones you find by Googling?

One More Time -- WESTERN WASTE

One more time--thanks everybody! I've thought long and hard on it. Here it is: Young single mom Liz Foley has started a new job: junior editor at an obscure trade publication serving the San Francisco shipping industry. Her new co-workers claim they are really just characters in a T.V. sitcom called...

Re: First Query Description -- WESTERN WASTE

Anyone? I'm not looking for comments on the book's synopsis itself, just for suggestions on how to describe it.

Re: Query - Possessed

Sounds interesting! PS -- There is already a book of that title by a fairly well-known author, true crime queen Ann Rule, although it is adult fiction and not young adult fiction. Maybe that doesn't matter, though.

Re: First Query Description -- WESTERN WASTE

Thanks Quill, your patience is much appreciated. There is a story arc, but it's kind of loose. Maybe an outline would help: In the prologue, it's the present day, and Liz is a middle-aged corporate drone facing a pink slip from a job she doesn't even like; she's gotten laid off a lot in her corporat...

Re: Mainstream Novel Query - THE DIM MAN

Great idea for a story! I'd read it!

I also had to re-read the query twice to "get" what was going on, and agree about the multiple POV. Great opening line though.

Re: First Query Description -- WESTERN WASTE

Thanks very much again to everyone for their gracious help. Here's my second try: Liz Foley is a naïve wanna-be journalist who got her J-School degree from the school of hard knocks. A young, single mom suffering from a broken heart, she’s managed to land her first real journalism job—at an obscure ...

Re: Critiques and Nathan's Sandwich Rule

I was in a writer's group many years ago and though the people were well-intentioned, they completely rewrote my book. It went from a supernatural/ghost story to a murder mystery! I got bored with the murder mystery angle, as my heart was not in it, and never finished it. I've sworn off of writer's ...

Re: First Query Description -- WESTERN WASTE

Thanks wilderness. Would it be appropriate to mention High Fidelity in the query? I didn't set out consciously to copy Hornby, but I love the book and the movie, as well as "Sideways", and now that I think of it, my major character is kind of a female version of the main character in HF.
