Re: Writing Sex Scenes

I will say, I won’t recommend any novel with graphic sex to a teenager except to warn them it’s in there if I’m asked. LOL. You'd probably be better off saying the book is boring. 'Warning' the average teen that a book contains graphic sex is as good as putting it in their hands. Very true. Many a ...

Pure Genius!!! LMAO

Oh, I too am a fan of gratuitous sex.

And I also find random insertions problematic. :-)
Unintentional innuendo, but if it works, it works :D

Re: Writing Sex Scenes

You go to an Alien/Predator/Rambo/Riddick movie for kick-ass violence. Yes, I DO! Anyone else around here think Kick-Ass had the best treatment of action and violence ever? The little girl kickin butt to a Joan Jett song? And the music playing as Kick-Ass comes to her rescue? Priceless. Okay, well ...

Re: Writing Sex Scenes

It depends Mira. In an erotica, sex should be there. Otherwise, it wouldn't be an erotic story. The more 'good' sex the better. The same can be said for violence. You go to an Alien/Predator/Rambo/Riddick movie for kick-ass violence. But then, if it's in context, with respect to the genre, I guess i...

Re: Writing Sex Scenes

Teenagers do not need to be exploring sexuallity. This is where a lot of trouble comes from. Sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy that they cannot handle. Reading a book isn't going to help them with that. I'm probably one of the five teenagers on this board. This will be the last thing I hav...

Re: Writing Sex Scenes

So sex. It is a terrible, bad, horrible thing that does not need to be glorified. It is useless filler for the sake of shock value and "thinking" it's going to get a rise out of our readers, when really, unless you've been there, no, you've not been there. I'm sorry, but I have to comment on this. ...

Re: Writing Sex Scenes

This is the aha moment for me. It has not occured to you that in a well-written sex scene, the mechanics is not the focus of the scene? Nor the 'sensual details'. Those are intended to play off the deeper meaning of the scene -- what is happening to the character internally. Yes, so many times. A f...

Re: Writing Sex Scenes

There is gratuitous sex, much like there is gratuitous cursing, then there are sex scenes. One is needed in context, the other isn't. Saying that sex is never needed is akin to saying that sex is needed everywhere. Black and white is never good. Sex can be a plot device in YA. In Forever it is. In T...

Re: Query - In the Shadow of the Dragon King

At first I wasn't too sure about this query -- mainly because I don't like reading stories about millionaires with problems, but with the tweaks AllieS suggested, I think you've got a winner. Plus, I'm a fan of best-friends fall in love sub-plots. But this sounds more like upper middle grade than YA...

I've hit a slump so I'm wondering if anyone is willing to critique my 27,000 WIP. We can do a full manuscript swap.

Re: Query: Serious vs. Jokey...

The second query, definitely. The first one is too vague. It made me think she was a school teacher. The second one captures your voice and tells me exactly what the book is about. But like others have said, shorten it to under 250 words.

Re: THE TIME revised version

I'm probably repeating a lot Joel Q has already stated, but I think it helps to have more than one opinion. Teri Monohan is a 24 year old secret agent, who must face up to her demons after three months of exile from the British governments Secret Departments. Always spell out numbers under 100. But...

Dear ____________ RE : I wish to submit my YA adventure novel, THE TIME, complete at 117,000 words, for your consideration. Always put this at the end. What would happen if the government was secretly using time travel to try and change history? What would happen if someone from another time was cau...
