Re: Google+

I really like it!! I just hopped over to Nathan's page and it looks great. I love the idea of circles, hangouts, all of it really. It really does have instant appeal. I tried to join up but I got the 'leave your email address and we'll keep you posted' message. Oh well, hopefully soon they'll open i...

Re: Thinking of starting a blog.....but a question

Mira, I have to tell you that I always enjoy reading your posts here and in the daily comments threads. You have a wonderful way of going wide on so many subjects in a respectful, non-judgemental manner. If you started a blog I'd love to read it, and recommend it to my friends!

Re: First draft vs. published work

I think Mira said, somewhere in one of these topics, that on J.K Rowlings website, she has posted the first draft of her first chapter, which is considerably different from what it looked like at publication. She's right! I also found, on Rowlings site her explanation of some of the plot changes she...

Re: One more chapter to go...

First up, welcome to the Forums! A few thoughts come to mind re the last chapter. If you have a gut feel about what best suits your character, go with that. I guess you've already thought about what happens in their future, or possible futures as a result of this battle? If not, going forward with t...

Re: Writing while Studying Craft

I had a major breakthrough from studying the voices in Jonathan Franzen's Freedom . Walter's over the top environmental rhetoric. Patty's quiet reserve. Dick's cocksure devil may care attitude. Joey's emerging independence. None of which I agreed with and it threatened to disrupt my participation i...

Re: Narrative vs. Dialogue

How much dialogue should there be in any given narrative is a matter of a conversation scene's reflection of real world experiences. Lots of chatter in a preschool class. Not so much in a tennis match, unless one of the contenders or commentators is John McEnroe. Ha! Good point, on all counts. And ...

Re: Writing while Studying Craft

My experience from investigating writers' poet's journeys is they first acquire mechanical style mastery, then craft mastery, then voice mastery. So very true. And perhaps craft and voice have a kind of loop effect over time, given their entwined natures. Polymath, I don't know if I've asked you th...

Re: Writing while Studying Craft

Brenda, I think you're in a great place right now; choice! Like so many things in life, writing is an both an opportunity to learn, integrate, consolidate and review as much as it is an enjoyable thing to do! I'd second others suggestions and say keep going. You are going to continue to find little ...

My preferred space to read is sitting on my bed with iPad in hand. But it really doesn't bother me. I read anywhere, anytime, paper book or iPad, whichever one is handy.

Re: Where do you get your story ideas?

As a child I had a well oiled imagination. So many ordinary things became so big and unordinary in my head. My dad used to shake his head and laugh at the stories his eight year old daughter would verbalize over dinner. A strong wind that day became an oncoming hurricane that we had to pack up and e...
