Re: Mention Previous Partial?
I think what gave me pause was it sounds like the original poster is querying the same project, to the same agent, again. I thought that was a no-no for most agents, even if the work has been revised, unless the agent asked to see a revision.

Re: How much do you pay for getting your manuscript proofread?
If this person went through and not only proofread for you, but also offered critiques, I don't think you overpaid at all. I wouldn't do that kind of work for only $25/hour. (Esp. when you consider the tax issues for a contract/self-employed worker). I think many people charge by the page, which wou...

Re: Do any of you other unpublished authors have websites?
Really, your blog can function as your website anyway. If you can, simply include a contact section, maybe a brief bio section and maybe a page with a brief description of your project, while keeping the blog as the main thing. Good luck!

Re: Literary Fiction
I'm a literary fiction writer, too. I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for in terms of "highs and lows" but I'll add: Highs -- It's character driven, which is what I most relate to. It can be complex and moving and beautifully written. But most simply, it's what I love to read and wr...

Re: Do any of you other unpublished authors have websites?
Sara, I think the blog is enough. I actually think it's unprofessional to have a website all about your unpublished works in progress, acting as if they're already published books or heavily trying to market them, etc. Yes, you can certainly include project descriptions and info about what you're wo...

Re: Query: Nirvana: Absolute Freedom: Spiritual Non-fiction
I'm not a nonfiction person, but I have to wonder -- is 23,000 an appropriate length for certain types of nonfiction books? When I first saw the word count, I assumed photos/diagrams/illustrations/etc. must play a large role in the book since it's so short. I would have thought around 50,000 words w...

Re: Has an agent gotten your name wrong?
Honestly, until you become a client (or the agent has at least expressed interest in representing you), I don't think there's much to complain about. Yes, it's a little annoying, and would make anyone feel overlooked, but he did his job in responding to your query/manuscript -- and even with a perso...

Re: Mention Previous Partial?
So you're querying the same project they already rejected? My understanding was that you only get one shot -- if an agent rejects your query or partial, you shouldn't resubmit that same project later, even if it's heavily revised -- unless, of course, the agent has welcomed a revision. If you have H...

Re: Present Tense
I don't mind present tense if it's done well. I think, however, it is more difficult to sustain successfully over a longer work (especially in first person) compared to a short story. So you're giving yourself an extra challenge right away. I don't think anyone should be told to absolutely avoid a c...

Re: Do any of you other unpublished authors have websites?
I'm glad I found this thread so I can now look at everyone's sites! I started a site and blog this summer (link in signature). I think it can be helpful and fun if you are actually interested in it and willing to invest the time. I can tell through google analytics that people find my site by search...

Re: Random Name Generator
Sorry, I don't know anything about this. All I know is that my "random name generator" is opening a phone book and scanning the names until I find one that feels right. I'm starting to realize, though, that phone books probably won't exist for much longer...

Re: Should wealthy writers win literary awards?
Agree with everyone else that a writers' bank account has nothing to do with it. (Kind of like when people get upset that "good" or semi-established writers win short story contests. Yeah, if all the fast runners stayed home from the race, I might have a chance of winning too.) But thank y...

Re: Editor's "indefinite hiatus"
So this was an editor you paid to help work on your book, right? It sounds like you take your current manuscript (if you do believe it's ready) and start to search for an agent. That would be your next step whether or not this editor was on an "indefinite hiatus" anyway. If you haven't rec...

Re: Crowd-sourced Editing
The thought of asking anyone to pay to read and critique my novel in progress (even if it's only 99 cents) cracks me up. Of course he views it as positive...he's attracting new readers, making some money, and even getting media attention and nibbles from publishers. According to the Chronicle, his b...
