Re: Soundtrack?

I really love Jablonsky's Transformers soundtrack. (From the first movie). It is great to help inspire tension building in a scene.

I've also listened to the Inception sountrack when I'm not writing high-action. It's soothing.

Re: Tears

I don't crave to make anyone cry, but my betas cry all the time. (No! It's not from my writing!)

I cried all the way home from work today as I worked out my closing scene in my head. Happiness causes tears, too. :-)

Re: Footnotes for MG?

I can't see a footnote going over well in middle grade... or any grade for that matter. If I have to look something up, I have lost my "groove" and I've been tossed out of the story.

Personally, I would not want to do that to my reader. I want them engrossed.

Re: Do you compose in your mind?

I used to write completely in my head, but I had the entire story mapped out before I ever started typing. I guess you could say I outlined, but at times while I was writing, I realized I missed something in the plot and I got stuck. Recently, I started outlining because I was up against a deadline ...

Re: Your Best Advice to a New Writer

The best piece of advice I got was from a published author who told me "You're not as good as you think you are, but you're probably not as bad as you think you are either." Everyone should find a beta reader or two, or three, or NINE. I had nine people read my most recent story before I s...

Re: Novel soundtrack?

I like complete silence, too. If I need to block out noise, a good ambient soundtrack helps. Right now I am using the Inception soundtrack. It's loud enough to block the talking, but not too distracing.

Beta partners needed for a completed, polished YA Fantasy

Hello all my fellow word-wranglers! I am looking for an experienced beta-partner to read a completed, polished manuscript as a final “once over” before I submit. HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT is a 110,000 word YA Fantasy. I need someone who can commit to turning it fairly quickly, (About 50 pages a week or ...

Re: How did you think of your blog name?

I'd definitely go with your name. It's about branding, remember. You can always have something catchy after your name in the title, which you can change on a whim, but YOUR NAME is what they should remember.

Good luck, and welcome to the crazy world of blogging!

Re: Seeking Timeline Partner

I'd highly recommend finishing your work before sending it to someone to read. You don't want your story skewed by someone else's ideas. It might go off in a direction you never really intended. I'd block it all out in an outline, write it the way you want it, and then release it to a reader for an ...

Re: Passive vs. Active Voice - who is winning in your WIP?

Passive and active is something that either you GET or you DON"T GET. I spend so much time with my beta partners trying to explain it to them, but for some, it just does not stick. I agree, that you can get a little spicy and slip a little passive in once and a while, BUT NOT ALL THE TIME. I th...

Re: How to be Friends with a Writer

It's nice to know there are other people out there who have the same problems I do. My sister wouldn't read my first draft for me because she doesn't like Science Fiction. I'm near my final draft and my husband still won't read it. He only wants to read the finished product. He just doesn't understa...

Re: Pure Adrenaline

I don't get jittery, but I do get nervous. I do most of my "thinking" while I'm driving to and from work. When I get a great idea, I try to repeat it over and over in my head... working it out to get it right. I think about it constantly until I can get to my computer. Problem is... on the...

Ugh! I HATE pitches. I am not an expert BY FAR.... But I'm not sure that this really tells what the story is about. It starts to tell us, but it started to lose me here... but realizes with the help of her broken family and strange new friend Benny that the truly awesome person need not rely on part...

Re: Yes! We will publish your novel… If…

This may be a stupid question, but has she told them it's important to the next books? AND are they interested in publishing the sequels? Maybe if the publisher knew the plans for the next novels with that detail the might feel differently...? CV When we last talked, she had decided to gently tell ...
