I agree with Krista. I liked the first query as well. I think some parts of it could use a little bit more explaining, but other than that, it's very tight and has a lot more personality/voice--as well as being easier to read--than the revised query. Striking the right balance should be the most important thing, of course. For me, if a weak protagonist works--meaning, I'm enjoying the story and her character isn't bothering me--then it works. I don't pick books to read after only looking at the cover or even after only reading the blurb. I've very thorough in the 'picking a book to read' process. I go through multiple summaries of the story, look at reviews on various websites, and then maybe skim the chapters or read the first chapter--...

I'm actually not a re-reader, unless you can call someone who has re-read one book a re-reader. The book I've read the most number of times is Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier. I only read it two times, though.

My favorite first book was Junie B. Jones Has a Monster Under Her Bed. The entire series nurtured my love of reading, really, but that was the first chapter book I remember finishing and loving.
