Re: Famous planners and famous pantsers

He mentions some of his process in this interview . Supposedly he doesn't outline at all. He quickly hammers out a first draft then retypes it several times with revisions until it's ready. I chuckled. First Bradbury says no one should tell writers how to write, then he imperatively says writers sh...

Re: Famous planners and famous pantsers

Ray Bradbury numbers his rejections into the high four digit thousands. As far as I know, he has yet to share the methods of his process. He mentions some of his process in this interview . Supposedly he doesn't outline at all. He quickly hammers out a first draft then retypes it several times with...

I absolutely love this song. Thanks for mentioning it!

I thought of another one. A Well Respected Man by The Kinks.

I absolutely loved these. Mariner's Revenge was hilarious. It sort of reminded me of an Irish drinking song.

My favorite story song is Fred Jones Part 2 by Ben Folds.

Re: Name that children's Christmas book!

Is it A Gift from the Lonely Doll? I think my mother used to have several of these books. The style looks familiar anyway.

Part of this particular story is up on Google Books.

I love that movie. The Royal Tenenbaums is also excellent. Wes Anderson has amazing vision. Casting Bill Murray every time doesn't hurt, either.

Read over your compositions, and wherever you meet with a passage which you think is particularly fine, strike it out.

Re: Favorite Screenplays

What a fun subject. It's probably cliche to say it, but Citizen Kane was a great screenplay. Orson Welles co-wrote the screenplay as well as being the star actor. But lauding that film is a lot like saying Ulysses is the best novel of all time. Most people don't really enjoy it that much. It's not v...

Re: What are you reading now?

unwieldy, I'm assuming you've read Cloud Atlas ? If not, it's Mitchell's best work (in my opinion) and the culmination of his experiments from Ghostwritten and number9dream . I've not read Cloud Atlas , but it is on my "to read" list. If number9dream doesn't amaze me, I may still try it o...

Re: What are you reading now?

I'm reading number9dream by David Mitchell right now. I really want to read The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet but my library doesn't have it, and I refuse to be "that guy" reading it at the book store.

Re: Jonathan Franzen

The irony here is that JF became famous or infamous for dissing Oprah's selections for her book club as "middle-brow." This apparently offended her to the point of disbanding the book club. He kind of apologized later, but I wonder if some intuition told him he was headed for a magazine c...
