Re: Should Writers Avoid Being Reviewers?

I don't post here very often, but Nathan's blog post sucked me into this thread, so I hope you don't mind if I jump in. Here are my problem with the idea that writers shouldn't review books: 1) If we try to please everyone we end up being bland and irrelevant. It's better, I think, to shoot for plea...

Here's an interesting blog post on the trilogy's tie-ins with Rome.

Re: MOCKINGJAY - spoiler edition

The reviews that really bother me are the ones that say, "Collins ought to be ashamed of herself," as if she was holding her readers in contempt as she wrote the last book. Or maybe they think she was partying all the time and didn't care about writing a good book. I didn't like the book, ...

Re: Violence in Mockingjay too much?

When I started Hunger Games, one of the things that forced me to read was the conflict that had no good answer. Katniss was going to have to kill innocents if she was to survive. I saw no way for Collins to keep Katniss alive and keep me liking her. But Collins brilliantly pulled it off. Katniss ret...

Re: MOCKINGJAY - spoiler edition

Heather, I agree with you about the love deal. I think Collins broke contract with the reader. The third book was nothing like the first two. It felt like a bait and switch. If you look at the Amazon reviews you find that about three quarters of the reviews gave the book four or five stars. So there...

Re: Is anyone else bummed about no more page critique Mondays?

Hmm. I quit reading the Monday blog because I wasn't interested in crits. I'm in a couple of crit groups and see way too many pages that need to be critiqued every week.

So...sorry. I'm glad for the change.

Re: Which book have you read the most number of times?

I've read the Narnia books probably eight times. The Wolves of Willoughby Chase seven or eight times. Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit maybe four times. And the little House books and The Hiding Place probably three times. Some of these, you read over when you become a parent because you have to sha...

Re: MOCKINGJAY - spoiler edition

Oops, one more thing. With the torture of the prep team, Coin's evil ways, and the kids at the end, used as a shield by the bad guys and killed by the good guys...Collins is making a statement about the present war and about all wars, isn't she? The US of A is not the good guy and the puppet governm...

Re: MOCKINGJAY - spoiler edition

Well, I have never posted on these boards before--I've never even visited them. But I had to register to add my thoughts to the HG thread. So SC must be doing something right. She's got us all staying up to all hours reading and then thinking for days and talking. I finished MJ at 4:30 this morning ...
