Re: What are you reading now?
Read Brisingr by Christopher Paolini because I'm a sadist. Laughed the whole way through - then felt depressed because he's a bestselling author and my favorite authors aren't as famous as him, even though they deserve it more.

Re: Query: Redemption - YA Fantasy - Version 2
A slightly tweaked version... I think I'm getting there. I struggle to make the opening paragraph catchy enough. I'm hoping this one is an improvement, with the juxtaposition and stuff. _______________________________________ Dear SuperAwesome Agent Person, The gods of Esrydil have cursed Eleanor wi...

Re: Query: Redemption - YA Fantasy - Version 2
Here's my second try. Do I still have too much information on secondary characters? I'm afraid that if I remove too much of the stuff about Frederic, he'll look like a boring, cliche villain. Even if I still have that problem, I do think my prose is more effective in this 2nd draft. ________________...

Re: How do you find your inspiration?
Anything that catches my interest. It's often a passing remark that someone makes. For example, I was watching a TV program about the 1800s and London. There was a short comment about some married woman who was at a party and met a gentleman who she believed was her soulmate. Little things like that...

Re: WYRM FIEND query YA Urban Fantasy
I haven't read any of your others drafts yet, but right now, I just don't feel emotionally invested in the query letter. I don't know why I should care about Chris or any of the other characters. And the 1st paragraph is confusing me. Why would Tiraenar give Chris time to track down Yvonne? Who is T...

Re: What are you reading now?
I read Leviathan, The Hunger Games , and Will Grayson, Will Grayson in the last couple of days. Leviathan was interesting, especially when you love steampunk as much as me. But sometimes I feel like SW skips over the possibility of wrestling with deep issues in his novel and just sticks to the surfa...

Re: Forgive me 2nd try Need criticism on a Reno Wedding
We drove for an hour or so more before Robert parked in front of a white brick building. The red OPEN sign in the window caught my eye. The place looked like a church, well a fax-paux church. I think there should be a comma after well. But I just don't like the whole phrase. Faux-pas church sounds l...

Query: Redemption - YA Fantasy - Third time's the charm?
Dear Super Awesome Agent Person, As voices screech and groan and beg inside Eleanor’s head, the aging mind reader struggles to keep her sanity. She also fights the overwhelming temptation to abuse her gift. Non-magical people are defenseless against her manipulation. She could dispose of them in sec...

Re: Share your opening sentence!
"The dusky sunset gleamed off the tops of the habitat domes, strewn about the surface of Mars like a cluster of acne." Your opening sentence makes me curious about what the rest of your manuscript would be like. When I read the first half, I thought it sounded vaguely like purple prose. A...

Re: Music Suggestions for Writing
I often write to soundtracks. Inception and Lord of the Rings are two of my favorite. Lyrics start getting distracting because too often, I start listening to them and will either start copying them down in my own writing without realizing it, or just stop writing to sing along. Another favorite of ...

Re: The Introduction Thread
Hi, I'm Diamonte. I'm 17 and slogging through my senior year of high school, hoping it will go as fast as possible. I tend to write whatever intrigues me, though I usually read fantasy and 19th century literature. I joined because the teenage writing thread sounded so interesting that I couldn't res...

Re: Teenage Writers?
Hi. With this post, I decided to stop lurking and join in the fun of the forums. I'm 17 and a fellow teenage writer. I really struggle with stay disciplined in my writing habits during the school year. I find that if I wander away from writing for a little while, if I just push myself to start up on...
