Re: Anagrams of your name
I'm lucky to have three vowels in my name (my first name only!) so I came up with quite a few. shale, leash, hales, aisle, heals, seal, sale, sail, lies, leis, ales, ails, shea, lase, isle When I add my last name, well the options are much more. But here are my favorites: smellier, schlemiel, measli...

Re: Anagrams of your name
It's a waste of time and nothings going to happen from knowing our name's anagram. Hmm, you know, your post didn't add anything positive to this forum. The people here are all respectful and pleasant, even when we disagree. If you don't like a post, you certainly don't have to comment on it. Just i...

Re: The Introduction Thread
Hello, Just introducing myself. I took a break from writing over the last few years to get into and then through grad school. Now that I'm approaching my final semester, I'm itching to write again. And I've found that I miss talking to other writers. My current project is a novella, though I'm stil...

Re: Bad writing is an oxymoron...
Foodways analogies are powerful writing metaphors. I don't know about "Bad writing is an oxymoron." Oxymorons are paradoxes, and like for paradoxes they put contradictory ideas together yet with an underlying truth back beat. Bad writing may be in the eye of the beholder, but not per se p...

Re: Dan Wells on Story Structure
It's kinda funny that you didn't like his I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER because it didn't do well here in the US (at least not yet), but over in Germany it's a huge success. For some reason his work struck a cultural chord with them.

Dan Wells on Story Structure
I'm sorry to say I hadn't heard of Dan Wells before I found these videos. But now that I've found him, I'm a fan! He gave a lecture about 7 points on how to structure a story. He brings you through several well-known novels and movies and shows you how the 7 points work on virtually any story. You o...

Re: The Great American Novel (not that I'm going to write it)
Wow, you've really thought this thing through! If I were to add anything to this, it would be something about Hollywood. Entertainment is such a big part of American culture, and most of it comes from there. I really like this idea of the Great American Story. Perhaps you are just wacky enought to p...

Re: Don't tell me I'm talented....
I just finished watching all 4 parts. Wow. Just wow! I had never heard of it this way, but now that I have it's like. "Oh yeah. Duh." Makes so much sense. I love the last quote on the last video: The dynamic range of raw human ability is tiny compared to the range of practiced human accomp...

Re: Why do you want to be published or why do you write?
You know, I recognize myself in almost everyone's posts. Right now writing is sort of a hobby, but I'd really like it to be a full-time job. I've told my husband more than once that I could see myself using his office during the day to write (he only uses it in the evenings), but that won't happen u...

...an art show or some other creative endeavor, like a BYO booze evening pottery class. Heh-heh! I have been taking time away from real, serious, down-and-dirty writing for about six months now. I finished one work and immediately went right into another and got really burnt out. Next time I will g...

You guys are awesome! I really appreciate your input. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do anything else to it for readers to know what I'm talking about. And you're right. There's always going to be someone who won't get it, sometimes even if there is extra explanation. Sommer, just so you know, I go...

Technical question
I am referencing the song in Mary Poppins , "A Spoonful of Sugar," in my WIP and I don't know how to set it apart. My MC is in a 18th c. candy shop, although, she's from the future. Here's the quote where I use it: Medicine? In a candy shop? Well, a spoonful of sugar, I suppose. Do I need ...

Re: What are you reading now?
I am reading an interesting novel my Ray Stokes. It is a supernatural thriller set in England. It is an excellent read. Despite being a thriller in the technical sense it is a gentle tale with an unusual topic. An aparition that haunts a small cove in remote Dorset. The tale is gripping throughout ...
