Re: Share your opening sentence!

Heather B, I like that one.

Here is my freshest, since I just sent out queries on my last line entered. The novel is titled "SHE'S A COLD BLOODED FLAKE"

Frankly, it was the bloodstains on the dress that were worrying her more than how to dispose of the body.

Re: Age Progression

I think it depends on how you feel about it. Whatever you do, DO NOT follow trends in publishing! They change too fast! Write what you are inspired to write. Write it as well as you can. If this is the best way you feel there is to tell the story you want to tell, then do so. If it doesn't sell righ...

Re: Share your opening sentence!

I like THE FERRYMAN sentence, and the one about the girl's tongue getting her into trouble. Here's mine from WHAT A PAINE! my UF novel. Going through final revisions now-queries going out this month!! I hadn’t expected to be chatting up a couple of lingerie clad sixty year old succubi this evening.

Re: Social Networking - does it really work?

I think blogging can quickly take writing time away, and I don't plan to partake. However, I believe that having a website is essential. Being able to list your books, some personal pertinent information, appearances, and maybe some commentary is always helpful to any fans or readers. I cannot count...

Re: How do you deal with feeling fragile?

Chocolate, YES! I think practice helps. Take a speech class at a community college. It does wonders for your ability to present material in front of others and receive criticism from strangers. I also think joining writing groups and online groups is good, as well as just putting your work out there...

Re: Brand New WHAT A PAINE! Funny UF

Thanks Quill. I am sorry. When I did post changes in the same thread I didn't get responses, which Is why I tried it this way. I was getting the impression that you just disliked everything, and I can't please everyone, I just can't. I've revised the query without the quotes and changed the wording ...

Re: Brand New WHAT A PAINE! Funny UF

Quill, while I appreciate your advice, the only query you have liked that I have presented has been the one that universally was met with criticism and didn't convey any sense of the personality that MY actual novel held. While you cited that it was the one you felt had a voice (others have felt tha...

Re: Brand New WHAT A PAINE! Funny UF

Lachrymal, I think I AM going to change it to red-blooded, and the quotes are definitely getting trashed! Bartle001- Thanks. I can't go into great detail about the bureau in the query without it getting too bogged with backstory, but when I didn't have the "secret" on there I had people co...

Re: Brand New WHAT A PAINE! Funny UF

I wasn't sure about the quotes, and I'm still not. She's a vampire and he's a demon, but my paranormals are REALLY mild compared to the standard version. I wanted to convey that without a huge explanation. If it seems hokey I'll ex it.

Thanks! I'm excited about the book.

Brand New WHAT A PAINE! Funny UF

Read all the input and incorporated. I am very pleased with this one. I don't think I will be making many more revisions. I had some good help from someone at AW that gave excellent advice and boosted my confidence about following my instincts on humor. I think when it comes to something like this b...

Re: Query: HARP-BROKEN--latest version at end..thanks for input!

I think it's improved. I liked the premise originally, but you've added some points in this query that actually make me want to READ it, and I don't read YA, so that's a good thing! I think it needs some trimming when it comes to details, and the essential information that seems very crammed togethe...

Re: The importance (and difficulty) of gestures

I think I do it pretty well. I do find that particular characters will develop habits, but I crack jokes at myself in my own writing. For instance, I noticed my character Sam smiles a LOT, so as soon as I noticed it, I had him smile, then another character, whose POV the story is written in, thought...

Re: Finding an agent with a sense of humor

Thanks everyone! This was great advice. Juice, it had never occurred to me to email an author, but it couldn't hurt! I 'm spending more time compiling my agent list than I thought I would! I hope it pays off though. It helps to have the webs these days.

Quill, I will incorporate those changes! You can google succubi, although mine are milder. An agent repping urban fantasy should be familiar with them.
