Re: What is more impressive?
While cranking out a bestseller every year might be impressive I think I am more impressed with a writer who can give me a once in a lifetime book that changes my life, like William Horwood's Skallagrigg or John Crowley's Little Big or even Julian May's Intervention (ok yes, that's thrice in a lifet...

Re: Open your eyes and begin
Julian May started a book with "It was a dark and stormy night." But that was Magnificat , her fourth book in her second series. Neil Gaiman used "It was a dark and stormy nightmare." It was quirky and cute and he is Neil Gaiman. The lesson there is, if you want to open with a cl...

Re: Men and Fiction
I do know it takes boys longer to get in to reading than girls. Boys move faster in numeracy and girls in literacy. There does come a point where they catch up with each other of course. But for boys to choose reading as recreation, I believe it is more likely to happen if it is modelled in their ho...

Re: Keeping Boys Reading
Yes I understand Percy Jackson to be quite the thing these days. My eldest is reading them. She is 18. My 10 year old loves Aussie author Andy Griffiths. The first one she read was The Day My Bum Went Psycho. He has many titles available though and is well worth checking out. He appeals across the g...

Re: EUPHORIA-- 1st query attempt!
Yes I did understand what you meant in your description of the Runes. But as you say, that is because I am familiar with them. You could say something like Disruption. Initiation. The Unknowable. So say the Runes, marked stones of divination based on the system of the ancient Norse. Their ominous po...

Re: EUPHORIA-- 1st query attempt!
Hi Riay, I cannot offer feedback on things query because I am still learning about all this myself but I really like where you are going with this. I like the premise. A centuries old feud between two powerful immortals, a mortal girl from a magical line (or something similar I am guessing), Vampire...

Re: Men and Fiction
Well there are all the action thriller guys, Lee Child, David Baldacci, Harlan Coben, Michael Connelly, James Patterson et al. They all spin a diverting yarn. My guy reads all of those. He also likes NZ author Maurice Shadbolt for some meaty historical fiction. Dennis Lehane challenges and confronts...

Re: Suggest a book for me, please!
I am with Mira, Neil Gaiman would be my recommendation if you haven't gone there already. The Graveyard Book is extraordinary and there is plenty more in his catalogue to love.
