Tumblr vs. Blogger

Wow, it's been forever since I've been on these forums. To cut to the point of this post before I start rambling about how much I want to get back into writing and reading: I want to start a blog. I want to start a book review, talking-about-books, talking-about-writing, blog. I've used both tumblr ...

Re: Best Dystopian Novels

Here are some EXCELLENT ones I read last year: How I live now by Meg Rosoff (Printz award winner) Life as we knew it by Susan Beth Pfeffer The Giver by Lois Lowery (Newberry award winner) I also once asked for recommendations in this genre and many recommended Cormac McCarthy's The Road . Enjoy! Th...

Best Dystopian Novels

Wow, I haven't been on here in a while. Anyway, I'm finally finishing Mockingjay and I've forgotten how much I love dystopian novels. I'm playing around with writing a short manuscript of something that could be dystopian, mostly just for my own enjoyment and to get the idea out of my head, but befo...

Re: Am I the only one whos Characters have music themes

The playlist for my current WiP is 189 songs long. I love making playlists for entire stories, and individual characters. Playlists for characters are normally like 20-30 songs long, but the longest I have for a specific character is 42 songs long. I'm constantly adding songs to my playlists, and I'...

Re: Novel Writing: How Long Does One Take?

I've been writing my WiP off and on for about the past two and a half years. That includes two NaNo wins, with two completely seperate drafts. Now I'm rewriting it again and by this May I need to have a polished, readable story. The only reason May is my deadline is because my school set it for me -...

Re: Reading as writers

Generally, the more I read, the more I write. I haven't written anything for the last few days, and I haven't picked up a book since last Thursday, either. The more invested I am in my own writing, the more I enjoy the writing of others. Sometimes, though, I do burn out -- sometimes I just want to s...

Re: Concerns about the darkness in recent YA

This thread sure is a lot to read through and digest! I've been meaning to read through it all and post here since the thread was started, but I've just been able to read the entire thread in its entirety, and these are my two cents: I'm seventeen, and I read (and love) most of the "dark" ...

Re: First round of edits - a long way to go!

How everyone edits is a little bit different. Personally, for me, first draft edits include a lot of rewrites, which are then re-edited. I wrote my WiP for NaNoWriMo, so I'm just starting to work on it again. I reread what I wrote for NaNo and then I rewrite it. Then I edit it myself, and after that...

What's Your Drafting Process?

I'm always fascinated not only by what people choose to write, but how they write it. My own drafting process is a little bit strange. My current WiP is the story I wrote for both NaNo 2009 and NaNo 2010. The draft I wrote in 2009 now no longer exists, for which I'm glad. It wasn't the right story a...

Re: Italo Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler

I haven't read this, but ever since I read The Baron in the Trees two years ago for an English assignment, I've wanted to read more of his work. Thanks for reminding me to put this on my summer reading list!

If I manage to get my hands on it anytime soon, I'll post back here with my opinion on it.

Re: Where do you get your story ideas?

Initially, the idea behind my main WiP came from a dream I had about two years ago. The WiP now looks like the dream only in its main theme and the basic aspects of the main character. When I first started writing it, I wrote it exactly as I dreamt it -- but the dream didn't fill up the 50,000 words...

Leonidas, thanks for the recommendation on the RPG site. I'm going to check it out! Love that stuff. No problem! I'm always looking to spread the word about awesome writing sites to people. Re: Female Characters

Everything y'all are saying is true, and I can't argue with any of it except to say that when it comes to children's books (see mudpuppy's post at the top of this page) the parameters are a little different. You do want quirky, you do want repetition even as high as MG (Harry Potter). Even then, I ...

Re: Female Characters

Just start making more female characters. Write them into short stories. I don't treat my female characters any different than I treat my male ones, though I have more guy characters than I have girl characters. I think I have more male characters than I have female is partially because I've gone to...
