Re: Fix the novel with a scalpel? Or an ax?
Have any of you ever written a full novel and then put it back on the shelf without sending it out at all? How do you cope? And how do you know it's time for the ax and not the scalpel? Grinning through angst, Matt Yes. I coped by do what polymath suggested. I took the novel down to brass tacks and...

Re: Are you a Crafter or an Artist?
I started out an 'artist' writing for myself and to stay sane. LOL, going from 60 hrs. a week to a SAHM was difficult. I wrote a massive novel that will never see the light of day, then I wrote some short stories, then an offer was made on one of those... As far as the OP goes, I'd consider myself a...

Re: The magical $0.50: Why ebook economics don’t work in librari
While the stats are interesting regarding print books, the generally significantly lower price of ebooks means a much lower cost-per-circulation point. If a library bought an ebook for 10 bucks and lends it out 100 times, the cost per is a dime. The real "issue" isn't in the cost, but in t...

Re: Complications
Webster's ties complication's definition to plot, a: a situation or detail of a character complicating the main thread of a plot, b: making difficult, involved, or intricate. I had a duh-huh epiphany moment recently. I've generally perceived dramatic complications as coming from external sources an...

Re: Tips for Dialogue Among Multiple Characters?
The reader experiences a "he said" as an almost transparent construction. It's less intrusive than anything else you can do to orient someone to who is speaking. What you don't usually want is to try using other verbs as tags, which can stop the reader. I'll break this rule if somebody sh...

Re: Love Scenes: Straight and Gay
You should definitely write the scenes to make you happy :D I don't know how specific agents/editors may handle these scenes, but I can tell you that Kensington's Aphrodisia line has all varieties of sexual pairings in very explicit scenes. Another thing I know is certain print publishers want their...

Re: Tips for Dialogue Among Multiple Characters?
ROFL! If I'd learned the basics of writing from a teacher like you, Whirlochre, I wouldn't be so against tags.

Re: Writing after a long break...
I just came off a long break. I haven't done anything in nearly two years. Basically, I let everyone and everything else take precedence. I finally decided to get off my arse, put my foot down, and I jumped right back in. Pulled a short piece from a couple of years ago out of its dusty file, cleaned...

Re: Tips for Dialogue Among Multiple Characters?
I use a combination of action and character 'voice' and cannot, in all honesty, think of a time I have ever used dialogue tags. Not using them was drilled into me when I was maybe nine years old at a young writer's conference. YMMV.

Re: What's your genre?
Been lurking, but this thread was a real delight :D I love seeing so many fantasy writers. I write across genres, which may be a road block should I ever go print, but works well in e-publishing. Action/adventure, paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi all with romantic/erotic elements. Although I have several...
