Re: Be the first to read my first page? :)
I immediately loved the name, Ronnie Gold. Fantastic.
Déjà Vu
I'm working on my WIP when all of a sudden, I have this feeling like I've written the last paragraph somewhere else before. And I have this whole forgotten memory along with it like, in the past I've told myself to write it and then save it because it'll come in handy someday. So for the next twenty...

Re: Gordon Korman's Advice on Dialogue & Adverbs
My kid brother loves his 39 Clues series. It's very cool you got to meet him.
And I agree, adverbs for kids aren't such a bad thing at all. Harry Potter anyone?

Re: Tone down a gay character?
I'm nineteen and I've lived in SoCal all my life (born in LA--GO DODGERS!, raised in OC). I think your MC's current perspective is absolutely normal. To most of the kids I know, gay isn't something that needs internal dialoguing because it just isn't a big deal. Also, the limo is okay since it's the...

Re: First Five Pages (Contemporary YA)
I liked this part especially: We played together and laughed together and practically lived together and sometimes it was like my parents were their parents and their parents were my parents. Except it wasn’t, really, because when Uncle Charles and Aunt Emmy’s car got hit by an RV, only Willa was or...

Re: Favorite Lines from Novels
Pretty much every single line of John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces , but to pick a few: " 'Canned food is a perversion,' Ignatius said. 'I suspect that it is ultimately very damaging to the soul.' " "Oh, Fortuna, you degenerate wanton!" " 'Well, what do you expect...

Re: Can you read while you write?
I try to stick to literary classics (Austen, Dickens, Tolstoy) because they're more "neutral" and any imitation that might occur can only be good.

Literary Bad Guys
Who would you vote as the best villain in literature and why?
For me, it's a tie between Iago from Shakespeare's Othello (because he's a ninja in reverse psychology) and Moby Dick from Melville's Moby Dick (need I say more?).

Re: Is there a such thing as too much dialogue
Good dialogue is difficult to pull off and you shouldn't put in quotes what can be summarized. If it's unnecessary or sounds forced, trash it. If it kicks ass, more power to you.

What are you listening to?
I don't listen to music while I write--I find it distracting--but before I start, it helps me relax and find the right mood.
My favorites are by: Radiohead, Kings of Leon, Lupe Fiasco, and Justice.

Re: What are you reading now?
I'm finally picking up Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis. It's supposed to be an excellent non-fiction about the economics and business of baseball. Sounds like good stuff and pretty excited about it.

Naming Characters
I have a hard time continuing with my WIP if I haven't found the perfect name for a character. It bugs me to use an alias (such as referring to an unnamed character as "X")--it just doesn't feel right. How do you choose first/last names for your characters and where do you find them? Any r...

Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union is fantastic.
