Re: An Island Never Cries - Women's Fiction - 1st 5 paragraphs

I completely agree that it's not working. As with most readers, if the first two or threesome paragraphs don't grab me then I give up. These have managed to stand the test of time with me because (as the writer) I understand the underlying importance of the paragraphs but have failed to convey. That...

Re: An Island Never Cries - Women's Fiction - 1st 5 paragraphs

Thanks so much for taking your time. When I forced myself to skip the 1st 3 paragraphs and go straight to the 4th, my first response was "wow" that's a pretty cool opening. I can clearly see your reasoning behind it and won't forget it's obvious potential. But...it's not the way I want Jul...

An Island Never Cries - Women's Fiction - 1st 5 paragraphs

****I'm sorry it's a long excerpt, and I never offer any advice of my own. After reading my writing, you'll probably realize that my amature advice wouldn't be very valuable. My specific questions I pose to anyone kind enough to read this beginning writer's beginning are: (1) Is the POV to neutral ...

Re: Ever Have A Character That Made You Cry?

I was reading Under the Hawthorne Tree aloud to my daughter. It's set during the Irish Potato Famine. Early in the story the family is burying (under the hawthorne tree) a baby who had died. My throat tightened and tears sprang to my eyes and I couldn't go on. My daughter completely unaffected looke...

Re: (Un)Realistic young character dialogue

Another thought. The first rule in making a persuasive speech is to accept that there are valid arguments against what you are proposing. This can work in your book too. You know your readers are thrown by your child's dialogue, so incorporate their anticipated reaction into the book's action. Have ...

Re: (Un)Realistic young character dialogue

1) I know this probably isn't your genre but when I think of precocious, I automatically think of Eloise at the Plaza. She plays the 6 year old marvelously. Sometimes it's 'OMG I can't believe a 6 year old can converse so well', but she can also play the 'well what do you expect, I'm only 6 years ol...

I hate that my hands dry out and age about 100 years. I detest using lotion. I consider it a good day if o can at least keep my knuckles from bleeding.

Re: Forum game: Random facts about you

I enjoy designing three layer wedding style cakes using 180 Pampers diapers for baby showers. "I wish" is my middle name, and I wish life came with a 'do-over' option just like kick ball does. I'm an Internet junkie. I plan vacations that I'll never take in excruciating detail. Daydreaming...

Re: What's Your Ultimate Writing Dream?

Winning the lottery so I can write where I please and when I please and let go of the fear that all I'm doing really is wasting time & energy that should be spent on laundry, dishes, vacuuming, raking leaves, weeding, skimming leaves out of the pond, balancing the checkbook, washing the dog - yo...

Considering "I Wish" should be my middle name, I wonder what I'd see if I looked in the Mirror of Erised?

Re: The Introduction Thread

Hi y'all. I'm Allie, and I live in Tennessee near the Georgia state line. I've lived in this area my whole life except for my 4 years at West Georgia College (now the University of West Georgia ) oh so long ago. I'm alot like Sarah Jessica Parker, just not the Sex and the City version. Sorry. I'm mo...
