Re: a Query Letter—what it means for me...
I've been told that queries should sketch what the story is about but stick to themes rather than details. (That always seems disingenuous to me, like Good Fellas is about the importance of family.) There has to be enough detail--this expert said--but don't give away too much plot, either because it...

Re: Foruming and our writing
Yes! Pour should have been pore. So much for happy but hurried posting. That was poor. And ungracious, Matera, given my request to be left alone. On the other hand, now I feel bad and I guess you feel great so you've made my point. Congratulations! Oh yeah. Should have said this right off the bat: P...

Re: Foruming and our writing
PS What I'm saying is, please refrain from educating me for free and please don't call me a "poor wretch." I upset easily.

Re: Foruming and our writing
Feel free to be good examples, by all means! Pour over every post and worry about every comma and clause. Eschew sentence fragments and feel really good! You can even try to freeze the language and mutter over split infinitives if you want. Hold yourselves to the highest standards and revel in it. I...

Nathan, you managed to reply to your old comments section often. I hope you don't intend to try to keep up that same pace in replying to all the forums blossoming here. You'll end up like Ringo in the Simpson's ep trying to get to every fan letter.

Re: Post Your Favourites
russetpomme: I liked Oryx and Crake . She's a fiction writer, not a futurist. I don't care for much of her work but that was a good story of one possible future. I didn't get the sense that she was trying to keep up with the latest on urban gardening. As for porn, that's timeless and forever. My mos...

Re: Writing Competitions
I prefer it when there is blind judging. Theoretically, well-known authors don't get a bump over unknowns that way. I have entered a contest where I won two honorable mentions (at the 25th and 26th spot, I think) and I noticed someone else in the top 100 got two consecutive honorable mentions, as we...

Re: How many projects do you work on at once?
One book at a time, though it's often tempting to write more than one at a time. (I tend to read up to ten books at a time, as well.) When the paid writing gigs come along (magazine pieces, columns, non-fiction, speeches and lobbying work) I have to put the novel aside until I plow through the curre...

Favorite part? I'm in it for the coffee.
Hardest lesson? I have to work at the edit so I don't underestimate the reader and explain too much.
