"Little, Big" is terrific, but the four book "Aegypt" cycle is even more incredible.

Anything by SE Hinton is pretty timeless.

As is "Queen's Gambit" by Walter Tevis. It's about a girl chess champion, and depicts her life from about 8 until 19.
