Re: researching dialects

I think you have several options here. You could do the phonetic spellings like suggested above. Find some recordings, YouTube videos, etc. of someone speaking with a Russian accent and listen to how they change the pronunciations of the words, then just write it the way it sounds. You could lay it ...

Re: Something I have discovered, how about you...

I was all over the map with mine. I did a rough outline just so I had a goal to keep in mind for the plot, but I ended up completely changing it and winged it. I also pretty much just sat and wrote off-the-cuff; whatever came to me came out through my fingers on the keyboard. Then during my first re...

Re: Pure Pain or Pure Ecstasy??

Mixed emotions across the board, definitely. I like imagining and coming up with the story, but I don't like the process of typing it out. While it's an awesome feeling to see my musings in actual words, the typing thing gets very tedious after a while. And editing... *shudder* But I do love to rere...

Re: Confession time

PJs definitely. Actually, on days when I don't have to go anywhere I usually just stay in my pajamas. I get up, do the whole brushing teeth and such thing, and just stay in them (I usually shower at night because my hair is a total frizz-ball if I don't sleep on it). It just doesn't make sense to me...

Re: New Moderator Welcome: Ink!

Congrats, Ink! And I'm glad that Nathan has someone to help him out around here; this forum got popular and busy very very quickly. I haven't been on here for a while because of the holidays and computer problems and I saw how many new posts there were; my first thought was, "Oh boy, poor Nathan..."...

Re: Hahaha....why on earth?

Hehe that is funny. I'm not sure if I'd want the person's posts to not show up in threads, because if someone responded to their post then you would have no idea what was going on. But that's just me. I'm still tee-hee-ing with amusement over the friend or foe thing, I've never seen that terminology...

Re: Query critique - REVELATION

I'm posting for encouragement rather than critique. I think you did an awesome job overall. Though it still needs work, you're a lot closer to the mark than some of us usually are with their first query versions (for instance, oh, me). Your plot was very clear to me and didn't leave me with question...

Re: Query Crit - SotA

I'll give this a shot, although I'm in the same boat and working on my query, as well. So, take my advice or leave it - I won't be offended, I promise. ;-) In the city of Karat-Sizan, someone who is hunted can hide forever amongst the multitude of people and still enjoy life. All Tzalaran Smitzeez ...

Re: Query Peer Critique

I'll give it another shot, I guess Thank you all who have added your valued input. If you feel so inclined to do so again here is my revised work in progress. Re: Query Peer Critique

Just my opinion - I'm definitely not an expert. - I think that entire first paragraph/sentence can be removed. It's rather confusing, and since the paragraph after it is an elaboration on the story, it feels very redundant. - The second paragraph as a lot of information in it, and it doesn't feel ve...

Re: My father had nothing to do with making that ship disappear.

Here are my 2 cents (disclaimer: I'm far from expert, but I'll try to refrain from giving advice like I am one) - I had to read that opening paragraph a couple times. I like the first line and the "probably" following it, but the first part of the next line is what got me. "But when one's own dad......

Re: Query help

OK, take 3. It's still 3 paragraphs for the plot summary, but they're a bit shorter. I trimmed the back story and tried to clear up a few misconceptions in the process. There is still one thing that bothers me: the bulk of the story is the middle section when she's adjusting to "family life," and sh...

Re: Query for Debut novel

I'm far from an expert, but here's what made me rather confused about the "after" query (it was better, though, bravo!): -the main conflict of the plot still isn't clear: is it their individual struggles, or their escape afterward? It strikes me that their separate trials are, but I can't know if th...

Re: Foruming and our writing

Seriously, though. "Foruming"? In my own defense, I did say to please excuse the title :-P It was shorter than saying "participating in forums" or something to that effect. I also enjoy the amusement people get when I make up words, but it would seem that the audience here is not so amused by that ...
