Re: On Memory, books, and the internet
The reason I decided to write this was because the (far more detailed) story from The Discoverers reminded me of some thoughts I had been having regarding the effects on memory of the internet age. If the rise of books had been a death knell for developing memory as a tool, how much worse is the in...

Re: When do you revise your MS?
But is it a bit weird to revise based on a half-comment from an agent who turned down the book? I did do a revision based on one agent's remarks, but it was because I thought she was right about a couple of things. And I knew how I could implement the changes. If you think there's a way to improve ...

Re: Rejection Stats
Ready to puke here. One of the agents who requested a partial liked what I sent, and asked for a full. She's said she'll have an answer for me on Monday. Hoo-boy. I'm not surprised at all. I remember your query. Your novel sounds really cool. Good luck! And that is a really fast turn around. I wish...

Nicely put. Couldn't agree more. People are absolutely attracted to the positive.

Re: How many books do you read per week (or month)?
I read anywhere from 2 - 8 a month. I do two audiobooks at one time, one on my iPod and one on my iPhone (read - one for the gym and running and one while I clean and cook). I physically read usually 2 - 3 books at once though not always by choice. It just ends up happening. Standard for me is to b...

Re: Panic at the finish line approaches
As I sit here, I feel panic welling up inside and I'm on the verge of tears. I don't know if I'm afraid of the coming rejection, suddenly having doubts about the quality of my work, or both... Has anyone else felt this way? I can relate one hundred percent. I got a full request from a recent pitch ...

Re: First Person Synopsis
Strictly third person is the way to go. No gimmicks. It's the author summarizing the story for a prospective reader/agent.

Re: Separating confidence from self-doubt
So, now, my beta readers have started reading my first book --- which I have put through so many rounds of edits that I can recall most of the sentences from it by memory --- and they keep telling me they love it. One person told me they read the entire thing in one afternoon because he couldn't pu...

Re: Writer Stereotyping
I know when people meet me in person they think I'm very quiet and reserved. My novels are anything but. Of course, anyone who gets to know me better realizes I'm not reserved or genteel at all, that's just my good first impression behavior. And, yes, I probably judge others the same way. If I saw a...

Re: Synopsis and POVs
Agents read the synopsis to see if there are good conflicts, believable plot progression/pacing, clear story arcs, a realistic/satisfying conclusion, well-developed characters And do it all in two pages. DEATH TO THE SYNOPSIS. *ahem* Brief rant over. I feel better. I really do. Now to go tackle the...

Yeah, I'd go with Women's Fiction. Even though the novel has other elements, you only need to concentrate on one for purposes of querying. Best of luck with it.
