Re: How have politics impacted your writing?

The recent political climate makes me want to be quiet. I see my loved ones on social media denouncing all relationships with people who disagree with them politically. (And I disagree with them politically)

So I mostly keep it to myself.

Re: Suggestions about characters

She has to love something or someone. The threat of losing that thing will usually get a broken person into the fray. For John Wick, it was his dog. For Denzel's character in Man On Fire, it was the little girl played by Dakota Fanning.

Re: If I include short quotes from movies/songs without permission in my book, is that a copyright violation?

This is a legal question. You need a copyright lawyer. Maybe Avvo.com?

However, I believe that it's up to the owner of that content. Some won't care. Others will cause you a world of hurt. There is such a thing as Fair Use exceptions. You should Google the phrase and study the exceptions.

Re: How do you get yourself out of a writing rut?

For me, there is no writer's block at dawn. I'm a morning person. All I need to write is to get enough sleep. If I feel refreshed, the words always come.

Re: What's the longest you've ever gone without writing?

Unless you count the writing I do for work, I'm in my longest rut now. It's been about three months since I've worked on my novel.

What Genre Is "Five People You Meet in Heaven"?

I intend to make a few research trips to local bookstores, but I thought I would ask the studied minds of this forum the following: What genre is "Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom? What genre is "This Present Darkness" by Frank Peretti? What genre is "The Maste...

Re: Major Blunder with New E-Book

Too long for me.

I'm reading the Gulag Archipelago right now at 1200 pages because it's an "important" work, but I'd never read such a long work of fiction from an unknown.

Re: my query attempt

Okay, here is my rough draft query for Preacher's Blood. 30 days ago, Gavin Preacher's sister disappeared. There were no clues. There were no witnesses. The police have all but given up, but not Preacher. He can't. Not now. Not ever. (slipping into melodrama) She's his center, his best friend, his ...

Re: The hardest part of the novel

I'm a lot like Hillsy. I don't think a novel is worth writing unless it rips out my soul, renews my faith, undermines my faith, adjusts my perspective, dashes my dreams, gives me new dreams, etc. About a third of the way in, I tend to assess whether this is happening. If not, I try again. I'd rather...

Re: The Most Random Thing that's Helped your Writing

Writing songs helps me with the rhythm of writing fiction, especially dialogue. I've been writing songs since forever. Second, my experiences with rural (country/jungle) Jamaicans. They have the most colorful phrases and a fascinating culture. I intend to write a novel set in the future with a rural...

Re: That's and Was's

I love that I'm starting to better understand poymath's posts. Either he's getting clearer or I'm getting smarter. Or both. I don't have issues with "was", "that" or "just." Of course, I still find too many upon revision but not so many that they're tedious to remove. O...

"Comic Strip" Legal Brief Filed in Amazon Price Fixing Case

In the interest of disclosure, I'm a lawyer. This is one of the coolest briefs I've ever seen. It's a comic strip! I wish I could do this, but I'm pretty sure my judges would laugh and throw it out.

Ha ha!

I wish writing were a spectator sport. I'd love to see what some of my favorite authors are up to right now.
