Re: have an agent, want a new one . . . protocol?
Telos, I would definitely tread lightly. I think it's generally considered bad form to query or even contact other agents until you've officially split from your current one, and I'd be leery of working with an agent who was willing to deal with you under the table. Since the legal matters/lack of s...

Re: After the Closing - YA Fantasy Query
Hi, Katiemouse! My thoughts below in purple . Date Agents Name Agent Address I assume you'll be sending most of these queries by e-mail, so you don't need to worry about all this old-school business letter formatting stuff. Just start with "Dear Ms. Name" at the top of the e-mail--and don'...

Re: Email subject line for requested materials
I never changed the subject line, but I don't think it's a bad idea. Some agents have filters that will kick everything with the word "query" in the subject line to their query folders, so if they don't check those folders often, they might not get your manuscript for a few days. As for as...

Re: Errrr.....Excuse me?
Cheers Krista.....Did you consider attaching the requested materials as a matter of course anyway? Hillsy, I haven't reattached the requested materials unless the agent has asked me to. In almost every case, they've received the manuscript just fine but simply haven't gotten to it, so I haven't wan...

Re: Errrr.....Excuse me?
Hillsy, I've had to follow up a few times. The last time, in fact, my manuscript actually had gone astray, so I'm glad I followed up. This was what I sent her: "I noticed on QueryTracker that you responded several weeks ago to a manuscript sent after mine, so I thought I'd just check in and mak...

Re: query: WHOSE TEETH ARE AS SWORDS (YA sci-fi) - Take 2
Once again, thank you for your feedback. I think I know what changes I need to make from here to make this query viable. And Anna, to answer your question, yes, that's exactly what the Stream is. Wingteeth are very similar to Feeds in M.T. Anderson's FEED (except Wingteeth are external and thus can ...

Re: REVISING QUERY/PLS WAIT TO COMMENT - MG Adventure -
Dear Agent: Since you’ve expressed an interest in middle grade boy books, I thought you might like ESCAPE FROM THE UNDERGROUND CITY, a middle grade adventure novel complete at 45,000 words. Thirteen-year-old Ethan Williams can sum up his life in one word: trapped. Born in a city buried underground,...

Re: QUERY - MG Adventure - ESCAPE FROM THE UNDERGROUND CITY
Dear Agent: Since you’ve expressed an interest in middle grade boy books, I thought you might like ESCAPE FROM THE UNDERGROUND CITY, a middle grade adventure novel complete at 44,600 words. I believe the industry convention is to round to the nearest thousand on the word count. And as for sticking ...

Re: YA Fantasy Query: THE DRAGON'S NEPHEW
Dear Agent, Chris Drake hunts dragons with an assault rifle. Great opening line:) That’s a pretty cool job for a sixteen-year-old. Too bad he’s breathing fire and growing scales. If the dragon slayers’ guild finds out that he’s turning into a dragon, they’ll kill him , n ot to mention what his dad ...

LATEST DRAFT! I'm not sure this is different enough, but I thought I'd play around with details before I started completely revamping the entire structure. Once again, thank you for your thoughts. (Oh, and michelleimason, I decided to leave my bio paragraph unchanged because I kind of like the stay...

Re: Query - By the Sword (Fantasy)
Dear Agent, Kill. That is what warriors are supposed to do. They are not supposed to dream visions or fall for their worst enemy. I'm not sure this opening is doing a lot for you. The crux of the story centers around Talya's faith, so I might find a way to lead with that. Twenty-two-year-old Talya ...

query: WHOSE TEETH ARE AS SWORDS (YA sci-fi) - Take 2
LATEST DRAFT IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE! Well, the last query I posted here ended up with a fantastic request rate, and so far, all I've gotten with my latest attempt is a few rejections. This is actually the same manuscript I was working on before, but I've rewritten it with another character a...

Re: Bransford Blog Bracket Challenge!!!
I filled out my bracket pretty quickly after looking at an aggregate of the (so-called) experts' brackets, and I must say, when I was looking at it again after it'd locked, I was a little concerned that I'd only picked one Big East team to the Final Four. Now I'm glad I didn't...
