Well, so much for my current WiP's sex scene on that basketball court after the big game . . .

Re: Let's Discuss Edward...
I say that it would probably still be as popular. The difference would be that his behavior couldn't be explained away by what he was. Well, that's pretty much what I was going for. His behavior's so creepy and repulsive that it needs to be explained away. If a man regularly fantasized about a half...

Re: Let's Discuss Edward...
I think one thing that needs to be considered about Edward is that he is a vampire. Well, of course that's the most important thing about him. Suppose he was written exactly the same, only as a flesh-and-blood boy (or man). Suppose all of his fantasy elements (sparkling and glitter, need to drink b...

Re: Speed Dating of a Different Kind: Choosing a Writer's Group
Rather than starting a group on your own, you might try the reverse. Join some very large group, where there's bound to be some people you'd like to work with. Make sure you exchange contact info with those you enjoy working with. When you get sick of the group, try and form your own with other peop...

Re: Speed Dating of a Different Kind: Choosing a Writer's Group
My advice, if you want to be in a crit group, form one with a couple good friends and try other people out until you find people that fit. You'll need someone in the core with the ability to ask people to leave. If you don't have one of those, don't open the group or the inmates will be running the...

Re: Speed Dating of a Different Kind: Choosing a Writer's Group
The borderline of that (and I've heard this, but I didn't really mind either way) would be, "the level of violence here doesn't work for me". I could take that in stride. I hadn't thought of that, but it's a good point. After all, while you can't realistically complain about sex in a roma...

Re: Speed Dating of a Different Kind: Choosing a Writer's Group
I don't know, I keep changing my mind about that one Frank. I try to be resilient in the face of rudeness, but I don't want to encourage it either. I think the rudest thing in critiquing is just complaining about the kind of story the writer chooses to write, which is very different than the writing...

Re: Speed Dating of a Different Kind: Choosing a Writer's Group
If you’re already in a writing group, and recognize any of these traits within yourself, it would behoove you to pull one or two trusted members aside and ask them if you are this person. Then I beg you, for your own good and the sanity of others, stop. It’s one thing to be candid; it’s another to ...

Re: Why I Don't Tell People I Write
Why don't I tell people I write? Becuase nobody wants to hear it. The blogs and message boards where writers congregate are an important outlet for me, to talk about my trials and tribulations (or more often, just read the impressions of others who are going through the same thing). I enjoy that ver...

I'm sorry, I misread that as Huey Lewis style and my brain broke from there. [smacks self] Misread, nuthin'! How to have a masculine narrative manner? I don't know, but I did write something on Feb 18 about writing fiction for male readers:

A more specific pen name question
OK, suppose I write thrillers. (I don't, but suppose). My name is Casper Milquetoast and I want to use the pen name Brock Samson. "Casper Milquetoast" owns the copyright, because Brock Samson's not a real person. (Or, if he is, he's someone I've never met and had nothing to do with writing...
Pen names
Hi everyone, asking about pen names Most authors I know don't use them. Those that use them, tell me they're a pain in the butt. I believe them. But --- what if you intend on submitting resumes in the next couple years? It's common knowledge that prospective employers try to research you online befo...

Re: How NOT to respond to reviews.
Well, self-pubbers hardly have a monopoly on bad behavior. Big publishers have been known to stop submitting ARCs to those newspapers whose reviewers offered anything less than slobbering admiration. Back in my newspaper days, my boss permanently barred me from any more review assignments after I su...

Re: Do you have an author page on Facebook?
Just to be clear: it does cost money to set up the author page on FB in the first place, doesn't it?
Does anyone remember how much it is?
And are you able to pay normally, or do they insist on drafting a credit card/bank account?
