why love story doesn't always equal romance novel

I did a guest post today on Amy Sue Nathan's Women's Fiction Writer's blog about why a novel that is a love story isn't always a romance novel. I know the issue of women's fiction vs romance has been discussed here on the forums many times (as I've been the one to raise it a few times) so I'm postin...

I've been thinking good thoughts for you since you first started this thread. So, so glad to hear that you've had good news. That's better than any writing related squee could ever be. Wishing you continued good things.

Re: Agent requirements question

If synopsis length is not specified you're best with a short one (1-2 pages, but remember you can single space a synopsis). The majority of agents want to see Chapters 1, 2 and 3 and do not want to see the prologue at all. Not something authors like to hear, but true nonetheless. Unless you have rea...

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread

Congrats Hillary! And thanks for the good wishes Mira and BComet! I actually have a new SQUEE. In April I attended the RT Booklover's Convention and I pitched some agents and editors. After multiple full request, an R&R from an awesome publisher and two offers of publication, I'm very happy to a...

Re: A full MS request from agent and publisher at same time...

Unless you specifically agreed or were directly asked to submit an exclusive you are free to send you manuscript elsewhere. If Writers House didn't directly ask you for an exclusive you can submit fulls to whomever requests one without notifying anyone. The second you get an offer from one you'd nee...

Re: Can you send revisions once you have already sent a full MS?

Unless you have an offer you are accepting do NOT tell an agent you've even sent your manuscript to a publisher. If the agent thinks you are already contacting and subbing to publishers they won't even look at your work---if you've already submitted it they'll feel it's already been shopped around a...

Re: red-faced rookie

Yes, everything that everyone has said here is sound advice. Remove whatever mentions of actions you notice are repetitive. A lot of the time the fact that your character is happy (smiling) or feeling dejected (shoulders slumped) is already apparent from the context of what's happening in the scene....

Re: The SQUEE GOOD NEWS Thread

Two and a half years ago I started coming to this forum because I'd written a book and I wanted to know everything there was to know about getting it published. Today it officially released from Turquoise Morning Press! For anyone who's curious, MEANT TO BE is now digitally available at Amazon, B&am...

Re: Breaking up Large Chunks of Monologue

You've already gotten excellent advice here, so I'll just add another way that you can try to look at this scene and possibly see where/how to break up the monologue. The main reason one needs to break up a monologue is that the reader needs breaks during it. Try to think about a time when a friend ...
