Re: DIY Pub
Yes, Margo! I love indiscriminant cheerleaders. It's the outfits and...Oh, wait. That's not what you meant. Ok, I won't send the faery novel on pink paper. And no glitter pen. And no confetti. But can I still send a horse's head to the first agent who rejects me? But I do feel mutually validated now...

Re: 99 Cent E-Books and the Tragedy of the Commons
Interesting, PassiveGuy, but I never said the e-books were more expensive than a paperback OF THE SAME BOOK. In particular, I don't expect many publishers to launch a mass market paperback at the same time as the e-book. Six of the ten e-books you list are as or more expensive than a typical mass-ma...

Re: The European E-book Market
I do not consider either of us terribly entrenched in our particular views, David. I believe we are both in information gathering and sifting mode in a changing publishing world. My ultimate personal concern is how best to publish my trilogy and later novels. I imagine you have similar concerns. I a...

Re: 99 Cent E-Books and the Tragedy of the Commons
But, as I and others have pointed out elsewhere in these Forums and on Nathan's blog, the best-selling e-books are as much or more expensive than mass market or even trade paperbacks. It seems readers value such e-books more than some writers do!

Re: DIY Pub
Heyjude, don't call yourself pathetic and cynical. That's our job. Gotham writing courses? Now THERE'S an idea! Forget the Smart Car. It's so small it may not even hurt the people you run over, much less kill them. Steal the Batmobile! Anyone who survives getting knocked down will be incinerated by ...

Re: The European E-book Market
Good story, David! Your friend honestly admits only inconvenience stops him from stealing. So he probably would steal a car if the law was enforced more laxly. And I don't think cutting the price of all new cars to $500 would help the very large problem of car theft. Thanks for the invitation to fur...

Re: Double agents?
Double agents? Blofeld? That's it! I'm hiring James Bond. I want my readers shaken, not stirred, and 007 can liquidate the opposition. The pen may be mightier than the sword, but it doesn't stand a chance against the Walter PPK. Moneypenny can handle my paperwork. And Q can make me a Kindle disguise...

Re: The European E-book Market
Thanks David for all your replies. You won't be surprised to hear I disagree with your first three points. I agree with point 4. I also agree with points 5 and 6, but only within their limits, meaning I agree some people will do such things but do not consider their piracy justified. I mostly disagr...

Re: The European E-book Market
I read your 1,500 words with great interest, David, and commented on them, possibly twice, once in the wrong post. Apologies if so. Or maybe Wordpress swallowed my comments. So, I'll reiterate my thoughts here:- I take it French law prevents discounting BY more than 5% of list price rather than BELO...

Re: 99 Cent E-Books and the Tragedy of the Commons
Interesting, but 'somewhere authoritative' does not sound very authoritative to me. And hardly any of my thousand or more books has ever been read by anyone other than me. And some of them not even by me yet. Or maybe ever.

Re: The Story Beyond the Story - An Inspirational Blog Post
Surprise! Surprise! There's a DRAGON on the cover! Who'd have expected that? A GREEN dragon, as distinct from a blue, red or brown dragon!
But seriously, this is an inspiring tale. BTW, I began writing at fifteen too, but it's taking me just a LITTLE longer to complete my trilogy...

Re: DIY Pub
So you steal a Smart Car and use it to run over all your friends, and all 80 agents. No more laughing or sniggering after that! Then you steal a Kindle and download your own e-book from a pirate site.

Re: Comparing e-books and the music industry
Good points, Sommer. And, as I've said before, music has no equivalent to a paper book, no way of enjoying music without a machine. It's also interesting that, despite much talk about the 99 cent e-books, the best-selling e-books are much more expensive, often more than a trade paperback, not to min...

Re: Dream sequences -- too cliched?
Good points, Margo. There is indeed much misplaced bitterness and hatred on the part of writers for agents and editors and readers. There's no accounting for taste and people can disagree without being disagreeable. I would pay great attention to what an agent, editor or reader said about my writing...

Re: What to do with parents?
Immediately after my teenage protagonist is finally separated from his parents, the ocean liner he is traveling on is attacked by saboteurs, an entire fleet of Fascist fishing boats and whalers, and dozens of 500 foot long sea snakes. His parents still being there probably would not have made much d...
