Thanks Nathan!
OK, it's not really a question, but I thought this was a good place to say thanks! Many months ago I sent out my first query. This site was my only guide, and the resources and advice on here were tremendously helpful. I spent a lot of time carefully researching where to query, followed your query s...

Re: Best Fantasy Books
/agree with many of the above, but I have to add props to Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for their Dragonlance Chronicles series... reading those as a kid had me hooked on fantasy ever since.

Re: Start with THE HOBBIT or FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING?
Agreed 100%. After Mordor, I wasn't ready to leave Middle Earth... The Shire part was like hitting the snooze button and being able to briefly go back to a great dream, as opposed to being jolted awake out of it. And yes, it fit perfectly with how the Hobbits grew as characters. I know some people t...

Re: Include in a query?
That does. Tier 4 reviews, so exclude. I had a suspicion that might be the case.
Much appreciated!

Re: Ask Nathan
Hi Bryan, I have a lot of these books, but the ones I have seen are not using Tolkien/D&D-style worlds with elves, dwarves, etc. I would love to hear about any that are. That is what I am craving most. I enjoy these other worlds, too, just not as much. Hi knight_tour, I actually did a lot of re...

Include in a query?
Hi all, I'm writing a non-fiction, how-to guide type of book covering a field that I work in professionally. My question is regarding reviews by other professionals in this field. In a query, should I mention: A) Which professionals in the field have reviewed my book, and quote what they've said? B)...

Re: Two Competing Ideas...
I think most writers have had this dilemma before. Recently I was torn between editing and revising an old fiction piece, writing a new and exciting fiction piece, or writing a timely non-fiction. I've gone with the non-fiction, and am about 50% done, simply because it can't wait a few years. The fi...

Re: PREDICT THE NEXT BIG YA GENRE
Here's my guess, and it is just a guess as I have no facts to base it on. When I was a preteen, Star Trek and Star Wars were it. Since then, the YA stuff has gone kind of fantasy style (wizards, gods, mythical creatures). I think the success of Avatar is the first step in pushing the trend back to t...

Re: The Google Tablet Cometh
I think you hit on something Hillary, in regards to the flash issue... as cool as the iPad is, there are certainly some serious gaps in the product. If google can fill some of those gaps, and come in a the right price point, they might have something. They can learn from Apple's mistakes. I don't do...

Re: What happens when...
Sounds good. If it's not easily discernible to the reader, it could actually be pretty neat to read. There are a bazillion books with multiple main characters though, so if it's not a big difference, the reader might just think that's the case. Funny thing is though, since my last post, I actually h...

Re: The Google Tablet Cometh
Must say I'm a little leery about Google going into hardware. Despite all the cool stuff they've gone into, they still make their money as a search engine. That's what they do best. The tablet PC is a graveyard for much more experienced companies, with only Apple having a whiff of success. And Apple...

Re: What happens when...
Maybe if the second character's situation is more interesting, you might want to revise back and include them earlier.
I'm not sure if I've ever read a book where who the main character is actually does a full-on switch.

Re: Kobo Ereader in Canada
Thanks Mark, and welcome a fellow Vancouverite. That was an awesome review. I've seen the Sony e-reader, and don't actually like the screen... comparing it to my brothers Kindle anyways. When looking at the two, the Sony screen just didn't look like e-ink. If you're saying the Kobo is WORSE than the...

Transitioning to full-time writer
Here's an interesting article I found about a moderately successful novelist who made the decision to quit his job and write full-time:

Kobo Ereader in Canada
For the Canadians out there... I noticed in my regular trip to Chapters that they are now selling an ereader called the Kobo. Has anyone heard of / used one of these yet? The price point is there... only $149. I assume since Chapters sells it, you'd get the same books as Chapters.ca? Looks good from...
