Non Fiction Proposals for memoirs- yes, no, maybe so?

Hi Nathan, I am a bit frustrated with the genre my unpublished book falls into (Memoirs), in part because I am never really sure which rules to follow in querying for a memoir, i.e.; non-fiction or fiction rules. As I muck through it , I keep coming across conflicting advice. This weekend at a write...

Re: Pitch! or pitch?

No, JucieinLA, you didn't use male pronouns. .... I would read a memoir about those issues by anyone known or unknown any day. In fact, I don't believe anyone has meaningfully addressed where society is now on womankind's role in the workplace since Rosie the Riveter in World War II. That time has ...

Re: Pitch! or pitch?

Polymath: this is hilarious: "a drunkard lawyer takes her [his] show on the road why" I really like it. Thank you! I wholeheartedly agree on the use of "ensues" . I kinda phoned that one in. "Male voice in pitch"- interesting. Did I use male pronouns? I better check. I ...

Pitch! or pitch?

Hello all! I am looking for your savvy and sage help. and even the not so savvy or sage help, if -you know- you're just bored. I have been working on my "pitch" for my book, in anticipation of my first writer's conference - and during a (perhaps) less lucid period of my weekend's illness, ...

JT- that only works if you are Paula Abdul searching for a cartoon character cat who said he was "in the biz". You aren't Paula Abdul are you?

Re: 10 reasons e-books might not eat the world

I couldn't agree more with the writer of this post- but it scares me. Are we all clinging to beta while VHS makes room for DVD? Here is why I am worried, and I would love to hear all of your thoughts on this, including Nathan's: In the past month I have seen a discernible uptick in stories featuring...

Re: Finding an agent with a sense of humor

Hang in there Amy, You'll be fine. Its true what people say about piles of rejections- its equally true that you only need 1 agent to represent you. The 50-100 other rejections, par for the course! Do not worry or be discouraged. I think its key to read between the lines of the rejections, and learn...

Created both as preparation for being published (one day. Perhaps!)

Re: Finding an agent with a sense of humor

Cheeky Cook - and the others have made excellent points here. I will add these points: 1. Learn the agent's sense of humor: I also search their blogs for their favorite books and what they like to read. 2. Find other authors that YOU think are hilarious and research their agents: Because I THINK my ...

Re: Page Critique Friday 9/3/10

I too liked the dialogue, it seemed very real. For me the first paragraph seems a little like you are trying to get an awful lot of information into a sentence or two...and that is hard. On the other hand, I did want earlier clarification as to whether Eddie was Jim's brother or not. Someone earlier...

Hi Nathan (and all!) I am hoping to impose upon you and all the other amazing contributors to these forums by asking for opinions on my one sentence "Pitch". Which is the proper forum to "pitch your Pitch"? I looked around in "feedback" and "Password protected"...

Re: Writer's conferences?

Hi there I have signed up for, and will attend the SCWC this year, so I can report back. The first question I think you have to ask is what do you hope to gain from it: networking? Skills workshops? Agent/Editor meetings? In trying to decide to attend a conference, I had to determine what I expected...

Re: Nathan's "High Concept" blog got me thinking...

Sorry for being obtuse, I wasn't trying to question or debate meaning. I was perfectly satisfied with Nathan's description of the term (see below) and though it would be fun to poke fun at ourselves. I don't take myself to seriously... please forgive! Here is what Nathan said that got me going: High...
