Re: Gender roles: Emotionally weak heroines
I didn't read every single word written here, so maybe I missed something, but does a girl have to be like a boy to be strong? Can't being a girl and embracing some of the weaknesses that go along with that be cool too? Is that perhaps what Bella and Katniss do and why the books they're in are so po...

Re: Name that children's Christmas book!
Oops. And I was just talking with some friends today about that test passed out at schools that says, "Read all directions before proceeding," and if you did, you would end up going straight to the bottom of the page and not answering any of the questions. Guess I still haven't learned!

Re: Name that children's Christmas book!
What you described sounds similar to "Bear Stays Up," so I looked that one up and found this one http://www.amazon.com/Wake-Bear-Its-Christmas-Stephen-Gammell/dp/0688099343/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1284151767&sr=1-1 . There's not much of a description of it, but it seems ...

Re: MOCKINGJAY - spoiler edition
I finally finished reading Mockinjay with my 11 year old son. We are both huge fans of Suzanne Collins. I have to say I was a bit depressed by the way everything wrapped up. I don't think it was bad. I would have liked it to take more advantage of the fact that it was "fiction" and therefo...

Re: Start with THE HOBBIT or FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING?
I don't even usually re-read books by the same author, so reading four in a row was quite a commitment. For my job I need to be as widely read as possible and that means I'm usually one-and-done when it comes to individuals authors. Your job seemed cool until I read that. I like to read as much as ...

Re: Summer Reading for kids
I see someone mentioned The Chronicles of Narnia, and I'll second that. At least for my son, the series has been a favorite since I first read it to him at age 6. He's read it all to himself more than once and he's now 10 years old. Another recommendation is The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau. Both ...

Re: Start with THE HOBBIT or FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING?
I seem to be challenged in the use of quotes here, but I wanted to mention how funny it was that Nathan said the Hobbits are slow to get going. That was my son's big problem with The Hobbit when he read it recently. Guess he's used to the faster paced fantasy writing of today. On his book review blo...

Re: Which book have you read the most number of times?
To be honest, the books I've probably read the most times are the Junie B. Jones books, but since I read them to my kids I guess that doesn't count. Right? On my own I don't really re-read ficiton books. However, if I had to re-read something it would be The Lord of the Rings books.

Re: Kids and reading
I can see accelerated reader quizes being used to guilt the kids, but so far my son loves taking those tests. They get rewards for how many words they read from the librarian at his school (he is one book away from reaching his 2,000,000 words mark for this school year) and also can earn rewards for...

Re: Kids and reading
My son is in 4th grade. His most recent book report included a sensory botte filled with 7 items that he then wrote 7 sentences for describing how they related to the book and present to the class. He also had to write a 5 paragraph essay (each paragraph had a specific topic), and keep a daily journ...

Re: Peeta Vs. Gale
Fun topic. I have to ask if any of you feels like you really know Gale. I don't. I found myself routing for him at times, but I'm not sure why. I know why I like Peeta. I would know why Katniss chose him if she did. Gale seems like a good guy and all, but there's not as much to go on. Not that I thi...

Re: Favorite Lines from Novels
A line I love comes from Chuck Palahniuk"s Choke . Unfortunately, I can't find it now, and I don't have the book here anymore. It was from a woman on an airplane and was about how she's so smart she can talk herself out of any plan. I'm going to have to find that again. There are lots of great ...

Re: POLL: Where do you buy your books?
Since I don't see it mentioned (maybe because you're talking about books for yourselves, not your kids) I will put Scholastic book orders on the list. I buy books for my kids through that or through their school's book fairs all the time. Other than that, Amazon is my most likely source. If I must h...

Re: What author would you have dinner with/what would you ask?
C.S. Lewis for sure. I haven't yet read everything he's written, but based on the Narnia series and Mere Christianity, I could listen and talk to him for hours. Not sure what specific thing I would ask. It would depend where the conversation were leading. Probably wouldn't have time for eating durin...

Re: TWILIGHT - thoughts?
Twilight. Interesting topic. I did read the series. I read it mostly to see what all the hoopla was about, but managed to get sucked in (pun intended). I'm kind of embarrassed by that now, especially having seen the movies, which make it look way more cheesy than it did in my head. haha On the subje...
