Re: Publishing consultant?

Alice, My partner and I do a lot of this type of work ( http://houseoflit.org/ ). And speaking as an author as well, costs vary. Depends on type of book (fiction, non-fiction, illustrated, poetry, etc), length of book, and other factors, including surprisingly an author's facility with their compute...

Re: Software Accurately Predicts Books' Popularity By Analyzing

I'd take all that with a grain of salt. Cliche, I know. And let's be clear: both articles point to what was found to be averagely true for Adventure genre, which wouldn't be the same for other genres. As the source article on the study shows (in Figure 1), Figures of Speech (FOS) levels on successfu...

Good going, ed! I was starting to think these forums wouldn't ever get one more new post!

Re: Agent requesting Book Proposal for Fiction Submission

In fiction the proof is in the pudding, and your agent only asked for the recipe?

Strange.

Yes, planning to participate.

Re: Agent requesting Book Proposal for Fiction Submission

No explanation. Except maybe in the UK customs can vary?

You are correct: in fiction the work speaks for itself. And must, since the largest part of the appeal of a work is the writing. Rather than the premise.

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

Today's blog post is an interview with thriller author Douglas Wickard, who has just released A PERFECT SETUP - the second Sami Saxton novel. Have a look! http://jilledmondson.blogspot.ca/2013/08/interview-with-douglas-wickard-author.html Good to see you back on Bransforums, ed! How is the blogging...

Re: Beta readers?

Perhaps at a more active messageboard, such as K-boards or Absolute Write?

It has been known to happen here, too, though lately few writers visit.

Re: Heck, I called it a thriller. lets see.

It is almost impossible from this to decipher what the book is about. You have seemingly constructed a mood piece about the book, but agents will rather want to see at a glance who are the main characters and what is the main conflict. Eschew convolution and embrace straightforward telling and showi...

Re: Timing in Publishing

Fenris, welcome back. Although there are nearly no "guys" left on this forum anymore, unless you count the crickets. Assuming your books are fiction, I would recommend self publishing in fairly close succession, say, one a month. This gives you the chance to benefit from each separate laun...

Re: Do you have a new blog post?

Wow. Edmjill, so it's mostly guest bloggers who post on your blog? Do you write any of your own posts?

Or are you busy guest-posting on other sites? I guess that would make sense.

Re: Circulating a book before publishing

It is automatically by law copyrighted the minute you write it, is my understanding. I would also put a copyright notice on any copy of the work that you hand out. Make sure it also says "All rights reserved" which by my understanding protects it in other countries especially. There may be...
