Re: Nominate Your First Page for a Critique on the Blog

Title: The Archbishop's Son Genre: Literary Emil’s mother looked nothing like Mary Magdalene. She resembled neither the painting of Saint Mary Magdalene penitent, dressed in a nun’s habit, pondering a skull on her table, which hung over Sister Agnes’s desk, nor the statue of Saint Mary Magdalene sin...

Re: Do any of you other unpublished authors have websites?

Some other guy in my home state with my same name has a website where he sells his self-published novels that are meant to accompany his paintings of sea-maidens. I've wondered if any agent has ever tried to Google me and then found him. I sure hope not. This is where you start to think about using...

Re: MC "hijacking" query?

It was Janet Reid at Query Shark who declared queries written in the person of the MC as a gimmick (it was just this week, in fact). Can it be done? Sure, but it has to be done exceptionally well. And even then, it's likely to be a turn-off (sort of like the people who wrote term papers for English ...

Re: Do any of you other unpublished authors have websites?

I have a website at http://www.dahosek.com/

You can click the link, but it won't be that interesting.

I do have a design waiting in the wings for that day when there will be content to be presented.

Re: Ask Nathan

I would think that humor is appropriate if it reflects your writing voice. If you're querying, say, a memoir of harrowing survival of cancer and cannibalism, levity would work against you. On the other hand, I would guess that Gary Shteyngart's query letter for The Russian Debutante's Handbook was a...

Re: Sending short stories to publishers.

Publishing short stories is a very competitive market. For every novel that gets written and sent out on submission, you've got to figure there's a couple hundred stories (at least) going out. I remember reading somewhere that the percentage of novels that are accepted for publication is higher than...

Re: Andrew Wylie profile in Harvard Magazine

On the other hand, the fact that all the authors in this go-round are dead could be that Wylie knows that he runs the risk of scuttling future publishing deals with this move.

Publishers are not the enemy.

Re: Andrew Wylie profile in Harvard Magazine

Nice move for established authors, maybe, but a really crappy move for the rest. Without the imprimatur of a publishing house, an emerging author is unlikely to get much attention, let alone sales.

He sounds a lot like I did when I was 16.

I was an idiot when I was 16.

Re: It's never too late to get published... and some app news

I'm thinking that an author's website is a good place or DVD-like extras, and I'll likely do something like that once I'm published.

Re: Critique Groups vs Online Writing Workshops

I hate to sound even the least bit paranoid, but is there any chance at all of people appropriating one's ideas when one publishes or exchanges sections of a manuscript or a synopsis online? Seems there would always be risk associated in the cyberworld. Ideas are cheap. It's the writing that matters.

Re: Query - MG - THE WHISPERING FERNS

It may be a stronger query if I don't feel the need to explain his nickname and just start in with the story itself. Almost certainly. You might want to apply the same to the novel itself (if you open with that event, I'd move it to later in the story when someone asks him why people call him "...

Thanks for editing/deleting the first draft. I've accidentally reviewed old drafts in giving feedback before. You're officially my hero. The Great War between vampires and humans lasted hundreds of years when the humans lost, they were enslaved. This should be a separate sentence. Rebels were hunted...
