Re: Write a query before you're done with the book?

It isn't in your best interest to query with an incomplete or unpolished manuscript. First off, you don't need their services until the book is complete. That's like going to the ER when you're perfectly healthy or entering in the kentucky derby without a horse. If you send them a rough draft, the a...

Re: Kick-Thyself Moments

Oh I've done worse. ^^ I actually sent an apology card to an editor for a spectacular short story blunder. Happily she loved it and the relationship was nicely smoothed over. It was very embarassing.

Re: Fantasy Query: UNDER A DEAD MOON

I don't think this query needs much work at all. I have trouble pronouncing your characters first name, and I had to look up "arcane" to be sure I understood your query. This is what the dictionary said: known or understood by very few; mysterious; secret; obscure; esoteric: She knew a lot...

Re: When Should You Feel Comfortable Calling Yourself a WRITER?

I have always called myself a writer, even before I had my short stories published. Now instead of dealing with people asking me what I have published, I have to deal with a condecending smile. "Short Stories. Of course. You have to start out easy."

Blah. >.<

Re: Prologue Critique Please -- YA Fiction

I meant to respond to this the first time I read it, but always seemed to run out of time. I'm glad I waited. This newest revision is greatly improved. PROLOGUE A cauldron of blue light churned in the valley sky, casting a watery reflection over the surrounding mountains and a deep shadow over the v...

Wow, thank you Hillary, Emily and Ocelott for responding!

I've changed the redundancy already. -.- I hate it when I repeat myself. How embarassing!

Fine-Tuning Your Novel

I recently finished the latest draft of my novel, Life of a Suburban Unicorn. I'm proud to say that it has reached the fine-tuning stage, where instead of adding/removing chapters I am just making small changes here or there. Maybe. If you could call it that. I print out a chapter that does not yet ...

Re: Starting to Query

Life of a Suburban Unicorn is my first novel, but with short stories I always had two stories in the works at the same time. That way if the first one was getting rejected, I still had that second one ready to go. Spreading the rejections around a little helped some.

Re: What are your pet peeves about your own writing?

My biggest problem that I am aware of is that I have trouble stretching out tension/suspense. I resolve things a bit too easily. And, when I look at how I can stretch these things, I end up not liking the solutions because they seem contrived. Oh yeah, I have this problem too! I guess its just some...
