Re: Pen names
I'm for pen names. I've selected two which will be used for different purposes, different genres. When I've joined writing associations, I use my real name with an indication of what pen names are used for which writing. It's a decision that the writer will have to make, based on their own paradigms...

Re: Is "sci fi" a poisonous label?
I disagree with the idea that sci-fi is a bad label. Many readers like myself are still looking for those successors to the great science fiction writers Asimov and Frank Herbert, just to name my favorites. If you see the covers on some of the old SCI-FI novels, they are hilarious, but the stories i...

This is great information. Clear and concise. I needed a refresher on links as well.
Thanks to all - especially Louise for asking.

Re: Writer's Market
I've had the Writer's Market membership, which offers a lot of information. It's sometimes difficult to wade through. It can be useful, but you need to spend time becoming familiar with it. Good Luck with that. This year I requested the Guide to Lit Agents instead to narrow the information down. I h...

Re: How do you deal with thoughts?
I use italics as many others have said. I have no problem with italics on a page, but usually limit the usage so the reader is clear on who's speaking. It works well with the omnipotent POV. The method you choose should fit the type of book or genre. OR you could develop a new technique depending on...

Re: Page Critique Friday 9/10/10
I really liked this excerpt . I don't mind the beginning, but I would like to see dialogue added to bring these characters to life. I like the setting of the jazz club, and hints of darker undertones come through in the scene in the car (what kind of pipe was that?). The POV can be omniscient, I li...

Re: Page Critique Friday 9/3/10
Thanks, Rebecca, for submitting your page for critique! I like the interplay between the brothers, and just from the conversation and the comment about his brother never making the pro team, I can tell that they are very competitive, especially with each other. The older brother (Eddie, I think) lik...

Re: So do you have any foes on this site?
Branding someone a foe helps protect your privacy. It is standard in some applications, but is especially helpful if anyone has had stalker problems. For some of us, this is an important issue. The experience of having someone search your name, read your comments, then email you with hate mail or cr...

Re: Of the characters you've written, who is your favorite?
The character you mention that's your favorite, Mira, sounds like "Emily Litella" who used to show up on SNL played by Gilda Radner. When she was told by Jane Curtain that she was way off base, she always said, "Oh. Never mind, then." I tend to like most of my characters, but the...

Re: Which book have you read the most number of times?
I. Asimov's "Foundation" series, and the "Robot Series: Caves of Steel, etc." Dorothy Dunnett is another author (writes historical fiction set in medieval Europe & Asia in the 15th century) who is excellent to re-read. Other than a select few, I don't like to re-read books. T...

Re: You have another think coming
Yes, I heard this one as well. (It usually followed when I gave my teen opinion on some subject or idea which didn't sit well with my mom.) It's probably one of those sayings which made more sense to the generation that originated it. (i.e., if that's what you think, then you are going to another 't...

Re: Flashbacks (writing them, not having them)
Flashbacks can add much more depth to a story, but they must be done in a way that seems transparent. I like them and use them when appropriate. I also like to get in the head of my characters, and also have been described as analytical type of personality -- which means we like to know all the deta...

Re: The importance (and difficulty) of gestures
Gestures and certain cliche' responses -- like the eye-rolling, twisting of the hair, etc. -- are the nervous reactions we might see in reality. Using these common terms to illustrate emotional reaction may be due to the extensive visual bombardment we receive every day through our tech toys -- game...

Re: All right vs. Alright
I prefer alright, but have been corrected about its usage by an author that I know. I also preferred using OK, but have been corrected to use 'okay' instead. What is in current use in polite society isn't always what's in use on the street. The lack of attention given to correct spelling seems to be...

Re: Men and Fiction
In my observations, a truly intellectual man reads a lot and has a lot of reading interests. That could span various genres, non-fiction, and texts on physics. If the male happens to prefer the physical or athletic pursuits, then that might erode the time for reading. If men read the way they 'shop'...
