Re: Maladaptive Perfectionism and Never-Ending Critique
Hillsy, can I recommend joining a critique group? Not going to a critique forum, as you have done, but posting a notice online saying, "this is what I write, and I'm looking for 3-5 critique partners who write the same thing to form a critique group." You take turns submitting one chapter ...

Re: Book trailers: who makes them, $$$, and are they worth it
Okay. I haven't read thi sthread in detail, but I have skimmed it. I saw a number of links to book trailers that I'd like to check out. But I haven't yet, so know that if you posted a link ot your trailer, what I'm about to say isn't about your trailer! By and large - and I say this coming from a fi...

Re: Another technical technicality question
What do you call high school boys in a query? YA males? YA men? YA boys...? You call them the same thing you call them when you're talking to somebody: teenaged boys, high-schoolers, whatever fits. Queries don't have any special language, apart from the housekeeping section, where you define your g...

Re: Paint by Genre?
Character A is writing the novel. He describes how every ideal has failed him. Character B falls in love with his muse (a dancer), but is forced to confront practical matters by an abusive lover. Driven by different modes of reasoning, logic and passion, the two plot lines converge, and you find ou...

I've coined a new phrase: "Best O' Fluck." But what does it mean?

I'm re-reading SHIVER by Maggie Stiefvater, then LINGER, in preparation for finally settling down with FOREVER. I love her writing: it's so lyrical and poetic. She's got a great style.

How about Davy Crockett? I don't think you mentioned him, and he's a huge part of Americana. (And now I have the "Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the wild frontier..." earworm. )

Re: How Price-Conscious Are You When Buying Books?
Interesting discussion happening here! I sort-of have an e-reader - I can pay to download stuff to my laptop or my netbook if I want, and I can access Google Books for free with them - but I never use them that way. I prefer to read on paper, regardless of price. It's just me. However, I do think ab...

Re: Use Science to Find Your Next Read!
Neat! Although I do kind of wonder about the proximity of JK Rowling to Stephenie Meyer - I love both of their books, BUT, their writing styles are completely different. Which makes me wonder if this is more of a "taste" thing than a "similarity in writing" thing. Either way, it'...

Hi Bcomet, I just found this thread. I am sorry to hear your news, but so happy that you have such good odds in your favor. And more than that, I am happy that you have your husband and your WIP, and that you have opened up to us here. Keep working on your WIP. Keep spending time with and loving you...

Re: Running and Writing
Haha, Ishta! Loved your comments! I too love to dance and can't run on pavement due to the shin splints. For me, that is more about balancing myself physically and fun exercise. But walking or "just jogging in place" (on a spring floor) is often an unbeatable way to daydream into story fo...

Re: Paint by Genre?
There are a number of agents out there who represent "contemporary literary fiction", which might be a fit. But without knowing more about your novel, it's hard to say. Why don't you ramble a bit here for us? Give us your one-sentence or one-paragraph pitch, or something like that, and we'...
