Re: Finding an Editor

You could try the site: https://www.writer.ly/

They allow you to post a book-related job offering and then different editors will bid on it. You can select based on their qualifications and their bid, so it's great for the budget-minded. Hope that helps!

Re: Why you'll never be any good....

The fourth law of writing: do not write smarter than your audience. Ha! From anyone else, that statement might seem arrogant, but in your case, yes! You will have to work hard to make your notions understandable to most. I mean this as a deep compliment, of course. I'm often blown away by your post...

Re: Why you'll never be any good....

Perhaps it would be more constructive to focus on the reasons that make you a good writer? I think we have all heard of famous authors who weren't great students, fell outside the mold, etc. I myself am not a very fast reader, but who cares? I read carefully. Sometimes I discuss books with fast read...

Re: Writing YA and making meaning of those adolescent years

Interesting article, but I found some of the studies a little depressing. It seems to indicate we don't change as much as we might think and that our self-esteem problems are carried through to the rest of our lives. I like to think most of the kids who were "uncool" in high school find th...

Re: CLOCKWORK IN E MINOR (fantasy)

I pretty much agree with Sleeping Beauty. The query is a bit wordy, and I think you repeat a few things, like how eccentric the Duke is. You can probably cut it down. One other thought is that it doesn't totally sound like a fantasy. Besides the part about the clockwork hummingbirds, it kind of soun...

Re: Do you have to listen to /everything/ a beta says?

Totally what Hillsy said. I think Brandon Sanderson's advice on critiques is really good. I think if one person says something, and it agrees with my instincts/aesthetics, then I listen to it. If someone says something, and I don't necessarily agree, then I wait and see if others comment on the same...

Taxes and Filing at a Loss

So...I've always heard that you can file as a self-employed writer and operate at a loss for 2 years in a row. Does anyone know if Turbo Tax has an easy way to file this way, or would you recommend an accountant? Any advice is appreciated; you don't need to be a tax lawyer. Links to relevant resourc...

Re: The Current Trend of Using Action Noun Titles

I don't love them either. Those type of titles seem to indicate a thriller or action-packed story, but they don't give you anything to picture. They are extremely overused and generic. How many books are titled Deception? A lot. But I guess they sell books, or publishers wouldn't keep using them!

Re: Need to revise a sentence.

I have this - "It also made him think of his father. Frank hated the rain. He hated his son, too. He never thought he'd amount to much of anything and took every opportunity to make it known, vocally as well as physically." I think the problem has more to do with indefinite pronouns than ...

Re: Query - MG Fantasy

Yes!!! I think this is a much stronger, focused query. Thumbs up! Twelve-year-old Eric's brain and body had been taken over by an evil cacodemon, so his sister hunted down the only people who could help him - the supposedly mythical winged Sentinels. But in exchange for their help, Eric has to live ...

Re: V.O.I.C.E. query- YA Romance

Dear (agent) Kildare Academy’s VOICE program just got a lot more interesting. What is the VOICE program? Why is it called VOICE? When Evalyn meets Carter she didn't realise how much he would change her life. By the time Evalyn realises she is in love with Carter he is one step away from being her s...

Re: Query - MG Fantasy

I can tell you've worked on this query. The specific details are good, but I feel it maybe has too much going on. Hope my comments help. When twelve-year-old Eric Ortega wakes up in an unfamiliar bedroom hooked up to hospital machines, he freaks out. His day goes from scary to unreal when a centaur ...

Re: YA Query—FB

I think it sounds cool! My only concern is the legality of using Facebook -- why not just call it the Social Network or something? Also, I don't love the name "FB" -- seems like you could come up with something cooler. Other than that, I think the query is very well written. Good luck!
